I don't think that it is a failing of the material. The doors are designed for light weight. If you designed some for road use they would be fine, but nobody does because they would not be much lighter.

in my opinion its down to method of manufacture. its basically because they're done using wet lay, without using a material for the job.

carbon isn't just carbon, they're many different types. Unfortunately the ones that are suitable, are too expensive to use, and make a profit from selling the doors.

This is FORD country, on a quiet day you can hear Vauxhalls rusting.

If you made the doors of the design we are talking I don't car what fancy material you use it will never be stiff enough. Which is no problem as that is not what they are designed for.

I am sure I could make a water proof door out of normal GRP, but it would have to be a different moulding to what is currently the norm.

don't use curley, there caron fibre can't take heat at all, leave it in the sun and goes all milky, mines in the paint shop at the moment, being sprayed because of this......

Exactally. the way i make mine is called infusion, you tube it. i cant be arsed to explain.

then poped into a wooden box lined with steel and 5 hair driers at either end. and left to cure under vacume. (works well)

So do the doors you make with this method stay in place at speed?

i havent made doors, however i wouldent make doors fully out of carbon.

id use a steel door, leave the edges of the skin in place about 4cm all the way around.

then bond a carbon skin to the inside of that.

the problem with carbon it is flexible.

wouldnt that look a bit odd with the lip all the way round and the skin on the inside? also would it be any lighter than ally?

Wouldn't a cross brace made up of a foam core and carbon layer work? It should stiffen things up considerably and not weigh much. Or a honeycomb core could be used if you want the fancy stuff.
