1st go to Bios

Then Drives

Then Sata Operation

And set it to RAID AUTODETECT/ATA

If the drives are raided you will need to load the raid drivers (i didnt the laptops raided hdd however)

some laptops use SATA Hard disks and even if they are not in a raid you sometimes need the drivers i have a batch at work that are like this (such a pain)

also id it no drivers or no drives(ie hard disk)

Have you tried not pressing it and letting it continue without the drivers... It may detect the HDD without the extra manufactures driver.

Otherwise pop on the dell site and see what they have in the driver download area.

They have a setting in the bios on the Hdd Sata Operation.

One works with vista, one works with vista and xp.

thanks for all your comments and helps guys, Maybe i'll give it a day or 2 to settle in, i was just worried about it taking un needed memory and power away from the unit, as it's a work tool i don't care about the looks ect.

Cheers TurbominiJ, i see what you mean, I've just had a go at that, putting the setting to be best for performance, and stopping all the crap loading up at start up, it seems i bit better and isn't using as much ram as before, but still using a shti load compared to my XP main pc lol..

See how you get on with your new settings but if you really want to go back to XP you will need to do the following:

1, identify the sata chipset and download the sata drivers (from Dell), copy them to floppy or cd

2, ensure XP drivers are available for all your devices - sounds odd but some manufacturers have stopped writing XP ones.

if you are going to go for it, when booting off of the XP CD you should notice a 'press f6' on the earlier boot screens, you will then be prompted for the driver files - copied in step 1. This ensures the installation process can see the HD.

It is pretty straight forward but a fair bit of work by the time you have recognised all the devices and installed all the relevant drivers.

Good luck! :)
