Through no fault of her own my girlfirend crashed her car last week and it looks like it will be written off. Unfortunately I used it for towing the mini to events so I now need to look for a replacement. It was (and still is from some angles) a Fiat Bravo JTD (100bhp turbo diesel) did about 55 mpg normally and about 44mpg when towing.

For various reasons I don't want another fiat so with 5 to 6K avaliable any of you got any ideas on what I could get to replace it? Best idea so far is a Seat Leon TDi (110bhp)

would 5-6K get you a decent TDCI mondeo??

Either way, the passat or octavia would be what i'd look at first off...

The problem with the mondeo is that its a ford and not only that, but the ford diesel is a bit pants unless you get a very recent one. The fiat had a very modern diesel engine and I don't want to go and get an old taxi.......

I like the german list too, but I am not sure i want to spend all that money and what will be at least a five or six year old car.

Just looked into some Jap cars, but they have the same problem as ford in that only very new cars have a diesel engine worth buying, so are very expensive........

It seems the reason I got the Bravo in the first place is still a valid one, that its cheep, good engine and not bad at everything else. Unfortunately the dealers are crap and it did have a few problems, but they were fixed under warranty.

Mmmmm, decisions, decisions

Perhaps I should point out that the main use for the car is a 60 mile round trip to work and back for my missis, not sure a disco will do 55mpg. Anyway here is a picture of the car after the bump.

I'd sell you my 2.5 V6 vectra for 5500, it's an excellent tow car (loads of torque) but it's a pretty thirsty motor. *wink*

Cheers for the offer, but when we tow with my brothers Subaru we only get about 18mpg so it has to be a diesel.

After much thought I have decided to look around for a Toyota Avensis D4-D. It seems like you can pick up a 3 year old one with high milage for about the right price. Not the most exciting car ever, but fits the bill spot on and should be good for about a million miles.........

NO NO NO NO!!! It's a utterly horrible car. Have you honestly ever driven one?? When you turn the steering wheel you will fall out of your seat and onto the floor, I promise.

Also, the valve seats in the equally horrible engine are cut two mm inwards on the valve. Great engineering. Bastards!

DEFINITELY German. I know an Audi A6 Tdi with 285,000 miles on the clock (99 year V reg)

My Passat has never missed a beat, put almost 50k on it in the last 12 months. You can pick up Passats for under 10k with less than 50k miles on. Payed 11k for mine a year ago with 27k on the clock, 2 years old. It even has leather!
