If you do drive a vehicle without a valid MOT it will usually invalidate your insurance, and if you have an accident or are stopped by the police, you will be liable to face prosecution for MOT non-compliance.

as far as i know you dont get points but can be done for no insurance worst case sinareo, i belive it is like tax you only get fined but dont hold me on it

took the info from here

http://www.nopenaltypoints.co.uk/NoMOTAndThePenalties.html

Driving without an MOT
If your vehicle is at least three years old, it needs to pass an MOT test before it can be considered roadworthy. Driving a vehicle that has not successfully passed an MOT test can land you a fine, but will not usually result in penalty points. You may also have your driving license taken away. MOT tests are carried out by most garages across the UK.

If you want to keep a clean driving license, driving a vehicle that is not insured or taxed, or has not been in for an MOT, is never a good idea. The fines may be relatively small, but the damage to your reputation as a driver is much more difficult to reverse.

leeds/wakefield.

no mot is a non endorable offence, from experience,

driving a non road worthy car is though, so just because it has no MOT does not meen its not road worthy,

over the years been asked to produce twice, both times did not have MOT cert for time of stop[ oversight] but heard nothing, both times it was les than 30 days since expiry, and i'm told this makes a difference, but still non indorable,

go ask tghe plod on pistonheads,

It is acommon misconception that having no MOT invalidates your insurance. You need to check your insurace details.

For example, my subaru insurance just says that the car has to be in roadworthy condition (whether it has an MOT or not). So having no MOT makes no odds.

My mini insurance is on aclassic policy and it states that an MOT is a requirement to validate the insurance.

As Carl points out, having an MOT does not mean that the car is roadworthy. So plod could give you 3 points for bald tyres, even though you MOT cert say's they are ok!

The point is that the MOT is like a calibration cetificate, it proves it tested ok on the day, but nothing more.

Its not a criminal offence so no charge can be made worst case you get ticket of conformity that you have to abide by in 3or 7 not too suredays again like the 7 day wonder fall foul of this and the police can prosecute.

If you state you were on your way to or from a place of test or repair they have to accept that or at least check the facts before applying any form of penalty chances are if the car looks proper they wont bother.

Ive ran out of Mot by a month before, pretty lucky i wasnt pulled, but after reading this post doesnt look like it would have been so bad. Still doesnt give me the reason to drive round with no MOT.

also gents you need to consider the state of the car, if it was me and it was a shit heap, IE dangerous condition (as per con and use regs) i would PG 9 the vehicle (prohibit it) these means the car can only be moved with all four wheels off the road ie trailer or flat bed.....the car must be MOT'd and proof of this brought to a police station before the PG9 is removed, if the car is driven with the PG 9 in place you would be arrested for dangerous driving and would go straight to court. the beauty of it is the matter would be an absolute offence so no trying to go not guilty at court.. this and you got points already could lead to a disqualification, so you need to think more laterally if you got no MOT the punishment can be your licence !!

if you hit someone and kill them there is death by dangerous driving, the danger element comes from condition of the vehicle of course....that is up to ten years in the clinker !!!

mind PG9 can be served on any vehicle ergardless of MOT certificate, but if yours has not been through a test it is more likely somwthing may be a miss with it than one that has gone through a test.

dangerous condition can be as pedantic as a loose battery fella's, so box clever folks *wink*

Richie

sorry for the witter on but law takes ages to explain hahahahaha

I drove round for 6 months without an MOT. I'd checked the insurance and couldn't be arsed 'til the tax ran out. the car was in perfect condition.

if you say this, bearing in mind your stopped after 5pm you just got yourself nailled for attempting to pervert the course of jusctice (no where is open after 5pm....DOE)

if you get stopped during the day and say "aye am going to billys garage up road to get it mot'd" they ring billys garage and NO APPOINTMENT EXISTS your screwed for the above offence

law states for the defence that it has to be booked in for mot and your route that you have been stopped on is the quickest and safest route from where the car was stored offroad to the test center.....so no booking in at billys garage in Aberdeen then driving to oxford en route *wink* hehehehe

plain and simple boys and girls everything has been tried with this one, ignorance is no defence keep ure papers up to date and dont try and lie your way out, or you dig yourself a nice big hole towards the courts.

Sold the turbo and seeing what the C20XE can do!

Near Lincoln

I'm getting a car mot'd soon that hasnt had one in a while. perfect nick etc.

now i want to do it at a garage i know very well as he'll take care on the ramps, brake rollers etc and also let me watch what he's doing rather than not being allowed anywhere near it.

Thing is, its 20miles from home and there are much closer MOT stations, i.e. within 3 or 4 miles.

How would i stand if i got stopped?

It will be insured but thats it as its previously declared SORN.

I could trailer it, but driving it would give it a good shakedown. Its passed scruitineering often enough so i'm confident that everything is in good mechanical order.

no thats fine as long as you dont like in john o groats and book it in lands end *wink*

also as long as there is nothing obviously wrong with the car which would indicate it would be a danger to other road users and members of the public.

still insured as you are en route to get the thing squared away.

make sure he has it in his diary etc etc .

Richie, I have facilities at work to carry out repairs etc. If my car had no MOT and I got stopped on my way to work to fix up the car would this be acceptable to a Copper. Obviously I won't have the car booked in any where if I am doing the work myself. Another senario ... you're on your way to a mates house to get some welding done.??
