After being fascinated by the "Careers" thread that was on here a while ago, I decided that you lot would be the best to ask about the following.

I am currently studying mechanical engineering in Dublin City University. I am in 3rd year of a 4 year Bachelor Honours Degree.
http://www.dcu.ie/prospective/deginfo.php?...inating_school=

As part of this degree, we are required to complete 6 months of work experience. This is organised through the college by the INTRA department. The format is that we submit a CV and several companies make contact with the INTRA department. Interviews are set up with the INTRA department as the mediators.

But, we are given some freedom to pursue work experience along our own path or we can submit a list of desired employers to the INTRA department and they will apply on our behalf.

So my question is, does anybody have experience of companies which have a good history of undergraduate work experience in mechanical engineering? Over here, virtually all mechanical engineering jobs are in the medical devices industry. I would be willing to travel anywhere for the right job, hopefully in the automotive industry.

I've more than likely left out alot of info but I didn't want to bore you with an extremely long post.

Thanks Steve, that would be the dream alright! I don't know how realistic my chances would be though.
I get the impression, from their website, that Rolls-Royce take on alot of undergrads. Are they worth applying to?

I was looking for the same sort of thing when I was doing my motorsport eng. qualification but everyone seems to be after experience...kind of a catch 22 really because you need a job in motorsport to get experience? *surprised*hwell:

There are plenty of companies around here but trying to get a job is impossible! I saw a job at prodrive a month or so ago...29 applicants in the first day!!

If you're after upaid work experience it may be a different matter though?

Matty, I know what you mean. I applied to them over a year in advance and was told that all undergrad experience spaces were already full!

Iain, did you start there as an undergrad? If so, do undergrads get much responsability? I was on an interview in Manchester during the summer and basically I would have just been laying carbon fibre. That is hardly my chosen career path *oh well*

undergrads get all the good stuff, trust me! its more white collar stuff but they do take on commisioning engineers if you want the hands on approach. lots of money to be had there.

i started after a-levels as an appo and then got them to pay for my degree

To be honest, I would love either the practical or analytical/theoretical side of engineering. I just want to get some work experience with proper responsability. I may add your place to my "Wish List" *smiley*

Sounds like you took the right approach by getting them to pay for your degree!
