As I was cleaning the idler gear, I noticed one of the thrust washers had “welded” itself to the gear. After getting them separated, I found the following damage.

The idler gear has some material transfer, but I think/hope I can clean it up…

The thrust shim is toast…

The biggest problem is the housing. It picked up substantial wear…

Is there anyway to repair this? The thrust shim that froze was .130”, I am afraid there will be more than .010” of material loss (which would be the biggest shim available).

Any ideas?

Thanks, Mike

If you were in the UK I would say the same as Carl - it just wouldn't be worth trying to reclaim them.

You could reface the casing by accurate milling and the face of the gear by specialist (expensive) grinding but your real problem would be a replacement thrust washer - I doubt they were ever made thick enough for wat you would then need.

Have a look at a recent (ongoing) thread in the technical chat section titled S/C drops.

Schrdinger's cat - so which one am I ???

I was thinking they were scrap...just didn't want to say it.

The engine was removed from the car when I bought it 10yrs ago. I think it was the same story with the previous owner. The plate on the car was from 1970...

All the evidence found throughout the engine is pointing toward oil starvation.

The thrust washer is to blame, you can see that the oil groove is nearly closed, there is no way for the oil to get in.

Use the later type thrust washers that have a gap to allow oil into the groove *wink*

So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...

Lost a gear box the same way sorry to see yours has gone the same. Try looking at the med gear set up it may save you scraping the box.

Mitsi Evo 7, 911, Cossie. & all the chavs ...... won no problem

Lubrication is one of the culprits here its scrap as the guys state
but.......................... if you fit SC drops in there along with a timkin idler the case will be ok

Also while I think about it, it could also have suffered partial seizure due to incorrect ( tight) clearancies

true sprocket . but high axial and radial loads and high rpms all common with the helical set up which killed it

a timkin type heical idler would sort this out helicals are stronger buy desighn and a lot better on the eardrums

going to sort something out with this

I have found the SC timkin idler, which look likes it would be a good fix with minimal effort, but I would be more interested in the helical type BENROSS referenced. Does anyone know where I can get one of those?
