just need a rough idea of what sort of CR i'll have from my engine when its ready. and what sort of boost it'll be safe to run.
spec is:

1293, 11cc cast omega's, standard head for now, i'll be using an RST intercooler aswell.

this is a large question
could you be more precise,
the idea is that there is not a best boost or best cr situation,
it is just a question of how many hp you want and how do yu want your car to drive,
for ex I have used std cr 10 psi of boost with a good intercooler and it gave me all satisfaction with std ignition and a bgw needle accorted with green spring,
this have been upgrated later with cam, lower cr and more boost
ended today with middle cr, (ie 8.9) 12 psi daily , phase 2 cam , ported polished 36/30cyl head still good intercooling (the most important upgrate to make), mapped ignition , special pistons, etc etc ; keeping high boost possibility (15/18) for special days using a secound tank feeled with special fuell
10 psis and std cr with intercooling should give you 110/120bhp and this make a very drivable power curve,
12 psi with 8.5 cr and intercooler matched with a 274 cam should send you in the 130/140 bhp range let know your power cible, it will be

Basically don't worry about 'boost' - this may as well be 'bananas' or 'elephants' for how important it is...
Once set up, 10psi will be about the limit using optimax. Bear in mind, the std turbo piston was 12.5cc or thereabouts...

Which cam do you reccomend putting in? I've got the standard turbo one and an MG metro one at the moment, or are there any others i should keep my eye out for?
