its in neutral

now the hard bit for me duuuurrr, the dizzy wiring???? it has a electronic dizzy if i put wire from dizzy connect direct to negative terminal on coil...

The electronic dizzy should have two wires going back to either side of the coil (later ones had a 3 way connector but still only two wires).

Providing you are using the small "loom" that goes between electronic coil and dizzy - which will make sure the connections are the right way round - all you have to do is put 12V to the coil "+" and battery negative to earth (engine block).

Do not get the connections between dizzy module and coil backwards though, use the small "loom" or correct coloured wires to be certain.

i'd pop the dizzy out, then you can spin it by hand and check for a spark.

they are pretty stable, a fair amount of weight and the flat bottom helps, you'd need a pretty poky lump to get near toppling over.

yes you will need a feed to the coil + for it to fire

probs guys, i have a decent battery & cant get the motor to turn on the starter too just chk oil pressure???? any ideas, i just want the starter to turn the motor & if i manage that i'll try to get it to fire! starter seems fine, engages & spins but looses its ummmph when conneted to the motor, the engine turns until it reaches compression then the staters umph is list, i've even hooked up direct to a running car!!!

how well does it turn over by hand?

Take all the plugs out then it will be easier to spin it up to get oil pressure. And check that you have a good ground connection.

turns nice n smooth by hand with a ratchet on the pully nut!

i cant get it to turn even with the plugs out, i'm going to clean up the starter earth & also the stater mounting surfaces, seems weired it wont turn over

Sounds like the starter is buggered. You dont have another one you can try just to check ?

yep have two spares tried them with the same result, one of them is on my daily drive mini & has no probs starting my car

i checked the starters i have including the specific 1275cc pre-engaged one & they all enguage & spin up

just so i can check i'm wiring this up right peeps will someone bullet point what wires to connect where, i dont get it it should turn over at least! the motor turns freely by hand & you can feel compression & here the air movement if you take the mechanical fuel pump off!

its really puzzling me chaps, i bet ive overlooked somat obvious & not pickin it up

If it's a pre-engaged starter, just put your jump leads, negative to some clean bit of metal on the engine/box assembly (the bottom stabiliser bracket is a good one) and the positive to the big threaded stud on the starter's attached solenoid (the big connection stud furthest away from the engine).

Provided it's pre-engaged, nothing will happen !!!

Now use a screwdriver or similar to bridge the positive connection (the stud) over to the LARGE lucas spade connector on the starter solenoid.

The engine should now turn over.

Get that far before worrying about ignition wiring.

Well, if you only get slow rotation (but it actually does turn) either,

Starter motor fooked (but you say you've tried a good one), or,

Battery fooked ??? or

As Joey says, useless jump leads.

The fact it turns means you have the high current wiring (albeit jump leads) in the right places.

i have pretty decent leads, i did have 2 sets but the shit ones bust (pound shop fodder)

i think mine are snap on from 15+ years ago, perfect condition tho!

the engine requires about (at a guess) 5-10lbs to turn with a ratchet on the pully bolt, feels the same as some othe mini motors i have that are in good order, if i can get it going i may wack my mirage turbo bits on!

the motor is super original & seems in top nic

any tests i can do on the starter? i've checked all the ones i have off the engine & they all operate ok

is there a special way of making sure the sprocket on the starter is hooking with the flywheel everytime

understandibly i dont want to plonk it in the car to have the same greaf!

Not really, if you hear a clunk and the engine turns over (even slowly) when you bridge to the large tag, it's done what it's supposed to do and engaged the pinion with the flywheel ring gear.

If you are absolutely certain the starter motor(s) are OK and the jump leads are OK, then you have a fooked battery (or your engine is a lot tighter than you think).

BTW, do not assume your other starter motors are OK if you just tried them off the car, just watching them turn by themselves means NOTHING compared to the torque they have to provide on an engine.

what would be the cause of a tight motor, its never been apart from the factory DEFO! it feels normsl to me to be honest but i've been wrong b4

it turns until the motor has compression on a normal batt, my thought that a normal 12volt batt should turn it over like when in a car is correct then?

i have the option of getting my starters checked by a pro for free so i think i will

even if my batt is duff it should turn over by hooking direct from running car hmmmmmm

this is a pain this but i need to resolve it, i honestly have a gut feel the motor is ok but as with any 2nd hand motor it could have a crap gearbox

With particularly tight motors, do they loosen up eventually after running or can you cause damage?
