This evening I had the misfortune of finding a socking great big queen hornet in my workshop.

I had not seen one of these until 2 years ago. Now we get at least 3-4 a year in our studio at work now.

I'd hate to think what the sting from one of these things would do!

I wouldn be so worried about the queen as much as I would about all her chums that usually tag along with her and get a little p*ss*d off when you mess with Queenie!

I think she's looking for some where to hibernate for the winter, wouldn't mind too much if it was just her but I really don't want a nest come the spring.

Apparently the sting of a European Hornet is no worse than a common wasp, but I'd rather not find out.

Not quite, I think that's an Asian hornet you got there, I'm pretty sure it's a European hornet.

Note I am not going to shove a macro lens in it's face to find out.

my dad got stung by one of these on his thumb a couple of years ago. the hornet was massive. he had to have his wedding ring cut off so he didnt lose his finger. very very nasty n pretty damned painfull too. luckily he wasnt allergic
