As you lot mess with cars on a regular basis, I reckon some of you might have put your hands on an oil filter and thought "what the hell is this tiny thing"???

Basically, I'm trying to figure out just what vehicles do indeed have small filters.

One I do know of was on my 2005 Legacy GT, which despite a 2.5 litre engine, had a filter that was around 60mm diameter and 45mm deep... Maybe whichever Hamer twin it is with the UK legacy can tell me how big their filter is?

I'm just wondering if there are other 'more common' smaller examples about - from ANY OEM. I'm not interested in aftermarket junk from Fram, K&N, whippy whop whoever - just OEM filters...

Cheers,
Dave

quite a few of the japenese diesels use tiny little filters. i can remember being suprised quite a few times at work about the size of the filters for the engine but i cant remember the vehicles unfortunately.

i'll have a little scout around down there tomorrow to try and see what books we have got. im sure we have a fram book, all-be-it a patern part filter i should be able to get vehicle make and model from it.

Renault clio's sports have small filters, 172, 182, 16v and williams all use the same ones. From memory they are about 50mm deep, same diameter as a mini one.

Toyota filters are microscopic. The one that suprised me most was a MK2 MR2

Pretty much 90% of Renault have a stumpy filter that Minisport use for their MPi oil cooler kit. Thing is I bought just the Mocal oil take off plate to fit the MPi block and the Kseries block. These are 13/16 UNF where as these stubby Renault filters are M20. This must mean that Minisport use a special adapter with their take off plates.

Anyway, I recon its wouldnt be too hard to replace the threaded insert on a standard Mini oil filter housing with an M20 or 13/16 UNF one, as there are still loads of genuine Rover oil filters knocking about, and I think I bought the last premium one from Minispares the other week *happy*

Also this may help you out a bit with dimentions perhaps

So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...

Ford KA is the one I use with a thermostat plate on the std filter housing and clears subframe easily. Right thread and everything but use the Halfords one HOF264 or whatever the prefix is as is shorter than the Champion part for same application

Good answers guys,

Seems that they don't get any smaller than the one I have - the 'aftermarket' equivalents of which cross-refernce with motorbikes, small tractors, ATV's and the like...

Basically - 68mm OD is as small as they go.
