I needed a clutch release arm today and I knew I had a spare that came with a box of bits a few years ago, so I went and found the right box in the shed...

And from an end view

And all because of this

Some people......

Now I need a large scaffold pole to put it right (and some weld on the end of the ball).

I hate to say this, but I suspect an old arm modified like this (and with the wear on the ball stoned down smooth) would out-last the 'new' versions you can purchase today...

Yes...

But, Benross, it's not that I'M tight.... It just amused me to see what someone who obviously is... would do.

Dave, I've seen posts of newer failed arms so I was intending to use an older one and just expecting to have to do a bit of weld build-up on the ball end. The fact that someone had bent it rather than build up the end is what I found amusing, especially as it seems they must have done it in the car.... bent on the side plane and still with a shot clevis pin....

Brilliant!

I agree with keeping an old one in there as the new ones are made from hard boiled egg.

In the 13's at last!.. Just

the reason the bent that arm was very little to do with the clevis pin wear or the damage to the ball in fact what they had was a dogy master cylinder / slave cyl seen this done a million times It is suposed to be a trick of the traid or some bull shit like that.

Yes, seen it many times also.

As you say - same effect as lengthening the pushrod, but easier for mr spanner to fix and charge mrs daisy lots of money for.

leeds/wakefield.

bending the arm is the beat way ,it keeps the ball end at the right angle of attack, stops the risk of it locking in the plunger,

Possibly, although I've not seen one myself.

I think the giveaway here is that it's bent sideways as well - implies it was done in the car with a scaffold pole and they couldn't get the pole on straight because of the brake valve / master cylinders etc.

But why the sideways bend ???

It puts it well off centre to the slave

Wrong slave before anyone says :)

The sideways bend is strange. However, it's not uncommon for the plungers to tsick and need a bit of freeing. Could explain it.

I have just looked trough 3 of my four Parts catalogues the first Austin/BMC/BL. The one from (1960) no listing for a curved release arm then the second one (1965+) still no listing though there is a listing for an offset slave cylinder which I can only imagine is something to do with left hand conversions. Then the 3rd one which is (1970 +) again the listing for the off set slave cyl but nothing about offset or bent clutch arms stumped maybe the good people in the factory bent them to make the clutch work on the production line ??

I don't believe they were designed to be bent. Maybe it was a 'tweak' done by the suppliers of the arms if the angle between ball, pivot, and puishrod hole was found to be out of spec on batch inspection?

Personally though. all the ones I've seen that are bent, have also had worn out ball ends, making me think this was a 'fix' done by garages equipped with a blue-tipped spanner.
