Hello all,

Im in the process of taking the engine out my mini (actually an MG metro with Carb) and came across various pipes and didnt know their purpose.

I have searched but with no luck! Could you put me out of my misery...

1) What is the pipe from the carb to the crankshaft?
2) What is the pipe from the carb to the flywheel?
3) What is the distributor advance (from the carb again) used for?
4) Does water enter the top of the rad from the engine? And what route does the water coolant take when bypassed by the thermostate?

Thanks all,

I hope to increase my technical knowledge to a reasonable standard some day!

Regards,

Chris.

Your first two pipes are breathers. These allow the gasses given off from heating the oil to be directed to the carb to be mixed with the fuel air miture and burned.

The fuel air mixture burns at set rate I believe 15 metre or feet per second, as the engine rpm increases the this burn needs to begin earlier so the ignition point is advanced thats the laymans explanation of why dizzy advance is required.

There is a thread on hear with a good diagram of the water system. Basically water exits the bottom of the rad is pumped through the block through the head out of the thermostat and into the top of the radiator.

Sorry just to clarify.

The gas given off by heated oil is remixed with the petrol and air mixture set within the carb?

Is heated oil gas emitted from the flywheel side also? Is this actually from within the flywheel compartment, or the other end of the crank?

Yes, the breather is from the transfer case which lives between the flywheel and block.

In the 13's at last!.. Just

Agreed, pull one apart and it all becomes obvious.....

Easy to say when I've done it a "few" times before, but we all have to start somewhere and this is very much a "hands-on" forum :)

Thanks for your comments.

Yeah, I am making good progress with taking the engine out the car (first time doing so) and I can already say iv learnt a great deal.

However when I removed the carb there were those pipes, and I couldnt find what their purpose was until I posted the questions on this site.

Even though I now know that there is a distributor advance, and breather pipes, I still cant find on the web basic information on how it works.

Im sure most of the questions will be answered when im actually doing the practical work but there may still be various bits and bobs that need clarifying...?

Regards,
Chris.

Of course - we all had to start somewhere....

Like, if you take the transfer casing off you will see that the breather connection that appears to go into where the flywheel is, actually does a 90 degree turn just inside the casting and actually connects to the engine/crankcase side of the housing. Thus it's an engine breather.

Get stuck in and it will soon become clear.
