right, i have a quesition.

is it possible to have a seperate tank with oil in it to feed the turbo?

this is not on a mini and it is not lubricated under pressure just by splash. so i was thinking if i had a seperate tank with oil in it and then an electric oil pump off the bottom connection to feed the turbo with the return back into the top connection (obviously would need to be lower than the turbo outlet.

now, the engine oil has NO filter *surprised* so i am aprehensive about tapping into the engine oil and then putting the pump from there blah blah blah.

i was thinking if i have seperate oil then the crap from the engine with it being unfiltered oil wont matter.

does this sound feasable?

discuss. oh and space is limited, as few gubbins as possible!

nooooooooo never

*whistle whistle shoobie doobie doo whistle whistle*

*Yes*

i busted the thing tonight so im thinking about starting it earlier than planned but i just want to get as amny things throught about as possible first before jumping in.

was greenlaning up in the normal spots and it started getting abit dark so was flying up this path and taking all the bumps pretty nice but then there are a few bigger lumps in a row so thought i'll go for a few flying lessons. second jump landed and the chain came off. plopped it back on and went to poodle back up to the van but it came off again straight away and then wouldnt start, uh ohh. havent been able to get out a strip it down tonight mainly because im being lazy but still might as well stick a turbo on it now ey!!

Didnt the minispeed superchargers have something like this?

I cant see it being a problem

Would a windscreen washer pump be up to the job?

would it be able to cope with the thinkness of the oil compared to the washer fluid?

im going to have a little search now for small leccy pumps but then that means that ive got to sort out a battery on it and some sort of charging system. but if i do this then i can fit lights and bits to it and im nearly there for it to be road legal if i so wish. even if not lights will help no-end when it starts getting dark in the places we go. sorry went abit off topic!!

How long a period is this thing going to be used for?

Could you rely on a gravity fed system if you put in a suitable restriction?

Would gravity feed work?

Does the pressure of the oil not force it inbetween the surfaces of the bearing journal and the running surfaces.

If this pressure was taken away would the force applied on thr shaft be able to push the journal through the low pressure oil film and lead to surface contact?

make an eltric pump for it? Rc car motor 12v and use some type of air suction to get it to move :)

surely turbos are designed to use engine oil feed at like 60-70psi so will a low pressure seperate feed work=no.
just flush the engine and fill with fresh oil and dont crunch the gears..?

hario - the problem is the engine is only splash lubricated so there is no oil pressure there to use.

nic, i would say 4 hours tops constant usage more than likely not even that much. not sure that i would trust a gravity feed system as the feed would have to be at the bottom of the tank and then the return even lower than that and that would not work.

unfortunatly leccy oil pumps are a tastey 180ish mohunies. so more option needed really. i dont want to be spending that much on a pump.

wat about a fuel pump? just strip it and remove the filters so it can't get clogged up so its a stright thru pump.

First you need to know the oil pressure and flow requiremnts of the turbo.

Also what is the thinnest oil it can use.

Those factors will limit your choice of pump (or possible alternatives).

But, remember that the oil isn't just to lubricate the turbo, it's there to cool it and the heat load is quite high. So if you have a small closed loop system you might just melt the pump !!!

if you want to go electric they can be had for 80 rather than 180

rod you are a legend!

i know that in the vauxhalls they take 5w30 oil (unlike what they say in autodata etc, we get a letter through ages ago to the garage saying that they need to take 5w30) but as for flow rate i have not got a clue to be honest. how could i find out/measure?

ive been looking over the turbo and at onepoint a while ago i was sure that it was a gt12 but now it doesnt say that on this turbo, i think i must have been looking at a different turbo. i will have to get the part numbers off it and see what information i can drag up on the net.

cheers for everything so far keep it coming *happy*
