well after the new pig sty is now finished and the new garage door fitted today one is still not amused.

why you ask your self.

well here is the story

enroute on the way home one was actually driving the mini with its blowing manifold and othe faults as the wife has been driving her lately, and i gave her a few beans on just 9psi as you do.

when i put her into 3rd she sarted making some nice runbling nosies, oh shit i new exactly what it was, i thrown a tooth on either the laygear or on 3rd gear itself, all the rest were fine.


which was bad enoughbut doable in the new mega garage with out any electric.

any way one was going to paint the new floor so i had some drip trays on the floor to stop any oil to get on it.

so one drove in parked the car repoistioned the trays and noticed loads of oil dripping out of the car and all over my new f@cking floor.

so pushed car out and on inspection not only do i need either a new laygear or 3rd or both i am going to have to use my reserve stock of boxes as there is a 3mm hole in the case right above 3rd
gear. plus she has some fresh ctv in as well just to top it off.

i think i have waisted about £100 worth in the last year


any way rant over now drowning my sorrows in my command reserve 1997 bottle of italian borrolo ( thats a great red for those who dont no and worth about£80 a bottle now for that year if you can find one).


tah for now from not a happy mini driver.

It's a great bottle of wine,also try amarone from valpolicella area.

well i also have had a 1997 bottle of amarone but drank that this year, now have a 2006 gathering dust.

still have 2 bottles of 2000 borrolo.

and ben no mate its a clubman sc set.

thats why i am realey f@cked off as £150 to repair it could be channled else were on the extension eg new freezer for one sea fishing bait ect.

and i need the hog to be on the road as her in doors needs a car to.
and the clubman estate needs to much work.

hoggy have you got the SC drops in the timkin type idler

no mate mine are miniwillie cast offs, they are jack knight ones. eg standard set up idler.

couldnt justify the extra cost of the timkin ones.

never had a issue and as i can do the work myself never been a consideration.

but defo 3rd has gone and either laygear ( more proberbale) or 3rd gear or both./

and i am now getting pissed.

the barrolo is now kicking in

f@ck me no mate, she did have the bini convertiable but its just the pug 406 hdi and the hog plus the estate clubman when i can get round to put her on the road but that will have to be next winter now.

i cant keep up with her buggering up another car lol, two is bad enough

well after mat and tone poppped round in just 2 hours the engine was out and stripped down.

and as suspected 3rd gear on the laygear had let a tooth go, which in turn had hit the conrod and pushed it into the casing causing the hole.

there is a slight mark on the end cap of the rod which i will remove , examin and touch up.

so it is a new laygear, case and a few other bits.

i am now toying with the idea of going to a 3.1 fd but not sure yet were abouts in all my junk it is so a 2.95 may stay.

Glad we found the problem, very unluck that it made a hole in casing, i hope you can buy the parts you need to fix her.

can the casing be rescued/welded up?

at least it wan't a hole in the block.

yes casing can be welded, it's only about 4mm round, it's under the nut where you fix to the block, so not sitting in oil, but hoggy said it still let 2 lits of oil out

after stripping down 2 boxes, this is the post mortem.

3rd gear on laygear had sheared then being flung up towards the crank, number 3 rod big end then squashed said tooth onto the side of the boxes causing a protusion hole through the ally casing.

the said tooth then fell to the bottom of the sump.

on looking on the grain pattern of the said tooth everything does look normal.

i still believe that the botom of the tooth valley needs to more of a radius rather than the retangular shape so making the gear stronger.

will have a word with gaz or gav tomoz.

any way one is still pissed off.

oh i had to remove the big end cap to redress it as it was markerd

just need to see if i canb trace down a new laygear.

oh by the way readers my standard oem layshaft is like new still but i will grace her with some new bearings, but the rest of the box looks as good as the day i put it all together plenty of years ago.
