Did well on Saturday.

Got the engine out, stripped and pistons out in 6 hours. Not bad for a first timer on my own!

Anyway, what do you guys think to these?

Also looks like the oil wasnt doing a very good job -was it very dirty or low?.
Maybe just overstressed/overheated?.

Hhmm you didnt try the old trick of porting your head by feeding it with sand did ya?

Isnt there a document on here somewhere on Piston Wear (causes)

Twas a PDF with loads of different failures in pistons and why it happend.

Maybe worth a look.

I've seen worse.

You need to measure the ring lands. If these are ok, then a good clean and new rings should be possible.

That's given me some hope Will.

I've got Joe (mini13) coming over to have a look first hand and have a measure up during the week.

I'd really like to keep them if possible as they are Avonbar Accrilites. Don't really want to fork out an other £450 just yet.

I had a look at the pdf with the images of damaged pistons and suggested causes. From that and what Joe has said. I think the damage on the sides above the rings is probably down to overheating/det.

Oil has been in perfect condition since I've had it. I've changed the head 6 times in under 100 miles and it's had fresh oil each time.

They are scrap, but i believe the failure to be caused by overheating of the crown, the crown then grabs the bore and leaves metal behind. i say pre ignition

Scuffing on the skirt is down to metal pic up from the oil

Definitely looks like overheating, and looking at the crowns more than likely Det. The worst 2 look the worst, were they inners or outers, or a picture of the same piston?

I agree Matty. The worst 2 do in fact look the worst. lol

I will make a note of what is where and post some pics.

The top 2 images are of the same piston.

As per Sprocket and matty IMHO,

The damage is overheating, initial cause may have been detonation/pre-ignition (call it what you want) but the initial rub sheds little bits of alloy to provide all the other vertical scores.

Before you spend hours with a file trying to salvage them, or spend £hundreds replacing them, determine the root cause properly.

EDIT - Any pictures of the bores to help confirm diagnosis ???

Do you have a lawnmower with that bore size ????

How the hell did they get flattened at the bottom of the skirt ???

You would consider using a piston with a broken skirt?

Yes there seems to be small signs of det or some thing around the top part of the pistons, as for all the scuffs along them, not sure what that is as that how mine ALWAYS are, when ever engine i've had.

Right
