Need some advise please.

I need some lights in my garage. is it possible to run lights of a separate car battery ? if so, what kind of lights can i use, and what would i need to connected it all up. or would i need a Generator.
Don't know anything about Generators. the one in the link says it uses fuel. would there be alot of fumes i take it ? it has to be more or less very quite.

Anyone who has done this before, and knows about kind kind of stuff. be kind enough to give me some info please :)

Thanks alot.

These new modern turbos with their quick spool up time, would make the competition harder.

Caravan type flourescent lighting is the closest you will get to decent 12V lighting that doesn't flatten your battery in an hour.

But it's still c**p compared to 240V

id run a line from your main house at 240 volts.

for this i used the same stuff they use on the motor way for running the lights, works wonders.

then into a switch box like you would on your normall house.

then you wire up strip lights and sockets.

jobs a good en.

Running something from the house is a no no, as the garage to a good 200 yards from the house.. wont work :( would that silent DIGITAL GENERATOR be no good then ? to much fumes ? it's just so when i'm working on my car. as the engines coming out. wished the garage was nearer to the house.

Lol.. so with the genorator, doe's it have to be on everytime your using it i take it. that one in the link. how many 100 watt bulbs would you say it could run, just want to get an idea of what it can handle so it's not overloaded...

The eBay listing says 850Watts (continuous) so 8 @ 100W bulbs or 14 @ 60W...... etc.

big leasure battery, good inverter and fluorescent strip lights. if your going to run a "remote" lighting setup you want the most efficeint lights you can :) as said above the 12v caravan lights are a bit pants so inverter and proper lights is a decent compromise. Just dont use incandescent lights, waste of energy :)

turbo 16v k-series 11.9@118.9 :)

some lights with 1000+lumens output, thats decent.

find these in teh uk http://www.powerstream.com/ballast-1.htm and you can run normal big flurescent lights off 12v *happy*

If you want a proper generator (the eBay listing you started with isn't a proper generator), I was in my local B&Q this morning and they were selling 2.8kW generators for the same price (£149).

I don't know if all branches would have them but you usually see them in the bigger branches at this time of year.

I got these in the end

http://www.screwfix.com/search.do;jsession...chbutton=submit

I mounted it on the celin. nice bit of light comes down. might get another one up there.
I'm going to get an inverter, and a good battery as a back up, incase i'm in there all day at a weekend, and the charge on the lights start to run out,(as it's a rechargerable light of course) i'll just plug her in. can you get an inverter where you can use to plugs ?

Yeah if its just lighting your after than your best suited with rechargable lanterns.

You can get various types, incl an adapter where you can remove the rechargable battery, take it home, charge it then reconnect it as you would do a battery operated drill.

I know speedy hire do some decent units which give lots of light and last for approx 8-10 hrs. They can also sell the units to you if you would rather not hire.

Regards,
Chris.
