Hello all,

Hoping you can give me some advice on how I actually remove the offset sphere driveshafts from the diff?

Iv pretty much tried everything, crowbar, hammer...even shouting and swearing at it but it just doesnt want to move.

Any special technique that you recommend??? (apart from the haynes advice of levering it with a bar - tried without success!) and the special rover tool (which seems to have disappeared of the planet) *oh well*

Thanks in advance.

Chris.

I found two tyre levers do the job. Trick is to get the leverage on the head of a bolt of the side covers

So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...

they should pop out with a whack from a hammer and bar,

the way i do it is use a peice of 1" box section at about 45 degrees down the back of the enginne, a few goou whacks and they normally pop past the retaining clip.

what may be easier for you is to pop the top ballsuspension joint each side and cut the boot retaining clip/zip tie off and slide the cetre of the joint out.

I sort of put the bar at this angle and whack it in the marked direction.

Ahh.. Iv been doing this all wrong I think.

I placed the bar on the actual driveshaft - past the rubber boot. Kept slipping unsurprisingly.

So that (collar?) should come out with the driveshafts then when you bang it out with the bfh???

Yeah have drained it.

The driveshaft on the offside fell out when I disconnected the suspension arm ball joints, but left the collar on the diff. So on the nearside the ballbearings are visible within the rubber boot.

Can you buy the collars new? and driveshafts? I assume their not actually called collars?

you can just pop it back together with some new grease and a zip tie provided the rubber boot is not split. just make sure you pick up all the balls before they go awol

the whole inner cv assy is refered to as a pot joint, i guess because the outer looks like a plant pot?

Due to my frustration I have actually torn the rubber boot (just slightly on the edge, but never the less still damaged).

Shall try this tommorrow then with my crowbar. Do I have to remove the clip from the rubber boot? Is it a circlip?

the oringinal clips are a crimped steel band, but normally they get changed for a zip tie.

This all sounds like a can of worms and confusion *oh well*

What are you trying to do, remove the pot joint from the gearbox, or remove the driveshaft from the pot joint as described in the Haynes book?

Trying to remove the driveshaft from the pot joint as per the haynes. But whatever is easiest as I want to remove the engine.

seeing as you have already torn the boot you wil need a new one so just cut around the boot and then you can pop the drive shaft away from the pot joint (collar) that way you will be able to get the engine out. this is the quickest easiest way.

make sure that you do not lose the balls in the boot though.

then when the engine is out it will be esier to remove the pot joints from the diff.

as above, if the boot is fecked, then just slash the whole joint round abouts and go nuts rippping teh joint apart

or, to get the 'inner pot joints' off from 'the differential output splines' use the bfh strategically (i.e twat it like mini13 says, if it doesnt come free, turn 90 degrees, thenrepeat process again)

my pissed up 2p's worth
