Hi

If I leave the mini to stand for a week then start it the oil pressure builds very quickly, literally straight to 20psi at the turn of the key, then continues to rise fast.

However if the engine is even slightly warm after a long run, like today I drove it 70 miles to Bristol let it stand for 3 hours, then started it again. the oil pressure took ages to build.

If I start and stop the thing quickly it takes a little while to build properly as well when warm.

I changed the oil today to see if there was any crap (gasket sealent) in it that may be blocking the oil pickup and there wasn't.

What do you guy think could be going on here as I am concerned. my only thought could be that the pressure release spring is sticking and needs a week to settle properly.

Hot oil vs. cold oil!

Mine gets in the way a bit, but only when it is up. If it is down it does not cause a problem.

It was very slow to build when the oil had become thicker again when it had stood for 3 hours

the oil pressure builds faster when say its 10 mins after a run, then in the example above 3 hours.

how long should I expect to get say, 40psi on a hot engine then?

Ok

I stopped and started the old girl today as I have been driving a fair bit.

This morning first start the oil pressure took ages to build. literally 10 seconds to get from 10-20 psi.

second start is built gradually but quickly say 10 seconds to 40 psi

third start I had 20 psi on the crankover instantly before it fired up, then rose rapidly to 60

Forth start, gradual again same as second start.

all were on level ground.

I'm now stumped, possible thoughts please.

I suggest that you try a different oil pressure guage. Also bleed the line from the engine to the guage - an air bubble in there can give all sorts of weird readings.Try all the simple things first before getting worried about tearing the engine apart.Different oil filter?

I did think about the pressure guage and filter last night, I'll give them a go.

In the garage......again!!

sounds like crud in the capilary pipe or gauge, as above, try a different gauge and pipe.

I never did mention what was wrong.

All it needed was the capillary hose to the guage bleeding. Now the oil pressure shoots up.
