Ive done a search but cant find a diffinative answer! Im wanting to fit a fan controller but dont want to pay 50 odd squids. What im wanting to find is a switch from a scrapped easily available car that will pass power to my fan at a certain temp

Does anyone have any suggestions

Most fan controllers are through the ECU. This is why I use megasquirt so that simple things like this can be added. Sorry I can't be any more help.

If you are going to use one from a scrappy, you might need to consider where you are putting it in your system and where it was in the donor car - most seem to have it somewhere on the radiator but it varies whether it is near the hot water in, the cool water out, or somewhere in the middle.

Presumably the temperature they switch at varies accordingly.

I think quite a lot don't use the switch direct, but use it to switch a higher current relay as some fans can draw quite a bit of current. Again, depending on how you intend to wire yours, could limit choice from a scrappy.

Ill plumb it in near the engine (hot out), doesnt matter what type of fitting ect ill come up something once i know what the fitting is anyways.

Not so sure...

I think something has been lost in the translation from Hong Kong,

"Type: N.O. (Normal Open)
- It is open until the surface reaches 85 Celsius degree and then the switch open."

It is normally open until the switch reaches 85 degrees then it opens.......... ?????????

However, from the rest of the description (irons, ovens, coffee pots....) I think it probably turns off at high temperature, not on....

So unless you're going to wire your fan "fail safe" through a change over relay, I think this one is the opposite to what you want.

EDIT - also just thought, if you're running an 88 degree stat, you need a switch that operates above 88 degrees unless you're putting it on the return line or part way down the rad.....

Also, i suppose id have to put it onto the RAD looks like it would be tricky to seal.

The other problem with this is that it has no hysteresis. I.e. at 85 it will change state, but if it drops 1 degree then it will return to its state. It could be on and off a lot.

have a look on radtec's site. they seem to offer a fan switch for their alloy rads

If something is worth doing, it's worth doing half of.

ok,

now im at home and can put som thought to this...

first off what rad are you running?
ie does it have provision for a switch.

there's plenty of fan switched on the bay but chances are they have a large (m20?) thread so unless you already have the hole for one its a no go.

somthing like an mgb (they are smooth sided) switch could be pushed into a t peice in the bottom hose and held there with a hose clip.

chances are you'll need to run it through a relay.
