Hi guys,

I hope someone out there may be able to offer me any advice on what may be causing my running problem.
My turbo mini starts on the button every time and absolultely flies for the first couple of miles and then I suddenly get a loss of power on boost. There is no miss fire as such but just a shear refusal to accelerate.Thought it may be down to detonation but the car is running nice and cool, the charge is intercooled and I have plenty of fresh air getting to the air filter and I'm only running 7.5psi of boost.Have tried different timing settings, changed the coil, leads, distributer, rotorarm and cap, tried different fuel and addatives, checked the carb/plenum gasket is correct one, tried the t piece trick, changed fuel filter, fuel regulator, praying to god, allah and buddah all at the same time, but its still the bloody same.
When driven slowly for a bit it seems to clear but again resurfaces after a few miles of hard driving.
The only thing that I havnt changed is the position of the fuel pump which is slightly higher than the base of the fuel tank on my minivan,.Putting it any lower is going to leave it exposed.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated as I have had an absolute titful this week.

If you are on factory ignition try changing the ignition pack, they have a habit of packing up when they get warm.

Will try and get 1 this week.Any idea of how much they cost and if there is a specific 1 for the turbo distributor compared to a NA metro distributor.

Forgotten more than most ever know

If it was due to the pump I would expect the problems to be worse when the tank is almost empty and disappear when the tank is full.

It seems to be heat related thing. Do you have the heat shield fitted below the carb ? Do you have vents in the bonnet ? It is possible that the fuel boils due to heat or the bi-metal jet holder leans the mixture.

I would imagine that if it was the module it would not run at all when it is faulty. However, I am not that familiar with modern dizzies.

Not sure on cost as it is ages since I bought a module, but the turbo ones are the same as the N/A ones

bloody expensive to buy new, about £30, but they are fitted as standard to almost all rovers, metros, 100, and a shit load of vauxhals as well, so borrowing one or two from the scrappy should be a painless experience. the only problem is you cant gaurentee you get a good one

And on the 7th day........... God created turbochargers!

Thanks for all the info guys.been out in the garage swapping bits over and out road testing all night, but still the same problem so in desperation I linked up an old boost gauge to the fuel line to check the pressure and low and behold it was showing about 6.5 psi at tickover.
In ignorance I had assumed that my regulator was set up ok as it came off a running car, when I tried a replacement regulator I stupidly set the adjusting screw to the same height. It makes sense now that each regulator has to be calibrated for each individual setup.
I havnt had time to try it tonight as it was starting to get late but will rush back from work tomorrow for a quick run and let you all know how I get on,but I have a good feeling that all will finally be sorted.

My carb is totally standard and has not been modified in any way, what are the benefits of modifying the carb jet holder?

Found this thread with the search facility which explains the solid carb jet holder in some detail(pictures no longer there unfortunately)

justin, tuning the car up on the rollers will be alot easier with the jet holder solid as the fuel gets very hot (being just above the turbo) and the bi-metal strips move which keep changing the mixture. Very annoying for the dyno operator!! This is what i thought was causing your problem, hope its sorted now?

Had another shitty night. The fuel pressure is now correct but still has the same problem.borrowed a ignition module off a mates turbo thats running perfectly but still the same and have stripped and rebuilt the distributor ensuring that the weights move freely and return to their seated position correctly but nothing has helped in the least.
After tonights test drives I am more convinced that it has something to do with fuel as it seems worse when going up hill for a prolonged period.I may plumb in a temporary tank and pump and see if it makes any difference.
Will also plumb a fuel pressure gauge inside the car (not recommended I know) so I can monitor whats going on.
so as they say back to the drawing board.

T3tone
Seems like a worthwhile modification so I have a spare carb ready for a rebuild so will do the mod while its all apart.
