As requested I sent 6 failed pistons back to be looked at apparently there was nothing wrong with them.

I have edited out some of my comments on the forum to close the subject. There was no pressure from anyone else, this was a personal decision as I just want to forget it and get on with my life.

rich from minispares north here.

fedral mogul returned your pistons to us this week along with a report complied by their testing department in italy.

a copy of the report will be made and sent to you on monday.

it answers all your questions and comments made about the mega pistons.

i can probably get it scanned and uploaded here if you wish for public viewing, however i dont think its fair to you to discuss the findings of the fedral mogul technical department made reference your pistons and claims publically until you have seen it.

cheers

rich

Was a bit obvious from the start really, i would have been suprised if they would have owned to a failure on their part.

Is anyone running any Hypatecs under some decent boost yet?

1/4 Mile 14.3secs 96Mph Terminal 10psi of boost.

Tel,

I can honestly say that I have seriously abused my 'mega' pistons. They have been boosted to 24psi once, but generally taken to 18psi max. This is with a 8.6:1 CR.

It is still on a carb, which (in all honestly) has never been set up as well as the effort you put in to truly optimise your carb - It has run to 13.5AFR under boost in that nasty cruise-to WOT transition. Also, at 6000+ RPM, I'm up at 10.8AFR.

I have been running fast-spooling turbo's all the time these pistons have been in my engine - T2's, T25's, and many small GT turbo variations.

The mini has been used and abused like this for many miles and drag-srtip runs.

The fact that the pistons I use and have heartilly reccomended to many others in the past are now NOT reccomended for basically "any turbo engine worth the effort of building" tells me that something is different from the pistons sat in my engine...

Exactly what is different, is not important. Nor is anything else i guess?

The fact is - that If you are using (or intending on using) Mega's purchased in the past year or two, and have not yet run your engine, these are NOT reccomended for use with any kind of boost and you are very likelly to suffer from a serious engine failure as a result.

I spoke to Minisports machine shop manager about pistons when I was looking for a standard size performance piston. His general opinion was pistons are shite these days, but if you wanted quality, buy Omega.

So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...

yep i taotaly agree dave, i still think they arnt made the same as a few years ago, weather its heat treatments or procedure or material change i dont know.

i cant see why as cast oemgas and power max pistons are great but these seem very fragile any thing over standard boost. plus they still have crap ring packs.

personaly i think that accrilites are the way to go.

always looking for them bigger bunches of bannanas

The DON also uses "old" Mega pistons. It has run 16psi boost, and to 9200rpm, 220bhp.

I am just curious as to why/how piston could possibly be going backwards in terms of quality.

Is it simply that due to increased competion, and the pressure to reduce prices, quality is suffering as a result.

You forgot the "profit" motive.

I see this all the time. Sometimes the manufacurer has no choice If the company doing the casting can nolonger get the material ingredients for a manufacturing run they will complete the mix with an approved alternative and offer it to the customer with the spec sheets that states the properties given to the finished casting by the materials used is the equivalent of that of the original specification.

All this is agreed well in advcance so the customer accepts this. the only time there is a problem is when the finished part is used at its upper limit and where the balance has been altered in the original forging process the part begins to fail. Although x+y =v the x and y values have been altered.

We get this on aircraft you have to look deep into drawings to find out exactly what has been changed and more often than not its a material spec change, and the part is refused. This is just one of several likely hoods that are all linked that could explain whats gone on.

Own the day

Tom (carl?) any idea how old the pistons are?

I forgot until just now, but Jimbo also used megas for a while prior to the K1100 build. He never broke any either.

Yes the very same. The pistons have been in the engine now for two years and everything the car has done.
