Hey everyone,

After taking my engine out on its first test run, I discovered that I was able to select 4th gear but once the clutch was released it was just shoot back out. This also happens sometimes in 2nd gear now.

So took the engine back out last night.....so either I fix the engine, and living in N.Ireland there aint that mini people available to do this.....OR I just put a standard mg 1275 metro box on. Would this be capable of handling the power. The car will be running only 7psi as std.

Any advice welcome...or if any one has a good box please let me know!!!

Not very sunny swanage

no idea what the actual problem or solutrion might be, but iirc the n/a gearboxes are the same apart from the final drive, (3.2 rather than 3.44 usually) and the nose bearing, which is bigger on the turbo. that said, you could quite easily use the casing from the turbo, and the rest from the mg

hth,

Pete

And on the 7th day........... God created turbochargers!

I may be stating the obvious here but are your engine mounts in good order or have you solidly mounted the rod change unit cause either can cause the gear lever to either disengage or prevent full engagement of gears.

Thats what my initial thoughts were Justin, but I was told if I was able to select 1 gear successfully I should be able to work them all. All the engines mounts were new, I did how ever change the rear mounts to the solid type, but I was assured that this was'nt the cause. When the clutch is in, it defo seems to engage 4 th gear.

Anyhow 1st and reverse are also very jumpy.

Thanks for your help Justin and Pete, I guess I wont know for sure until I split the box tomorrow night.

Mini gearboxes aren't that hard to re-build, if you take your time and examine all parts carefully. The haynes manual explains it quite well.

Once you've done it once you'll never fit a 2nd hand gear box to a car without checking it over cos most over the time somethings fooked or not quite right.
