I need to drill the hole for the tensioner pin in my new Turbodave alloy front plate... Anyone know the size of the original hole?

By guess is 14mm. Why not drill the hole as big as you need to?

It's actually 5/8" (~16mm).

Surprisingly large considering the diameter of the pin's head and the fact that the pin is right next to the pivot end of the adjuster, not the slotted end, so will cover a very small arc.

Unless it has some other purpose (which eludes me), Leyland must have expected a very large production tolerance on their tensioner brackets.....

Wow, that is a big hole. At first I figured I would just copy the original design, but now I may try a figure out what I really need.

Thanks guys...

oh oh oh - DON'T drill the hole!!!!

This was purposely left off the alloy plate - behind it is nothing but fresh air on a pre A+ engine...

Now I'm confused......

The hole the tensioner pin recesses in isn't fresh air, not an a 1275 PRE A+ anyway (green circle)

But, something I hadn't appreciated is that the extra (eleventh) hole for the extended cover ISN'T over fresh air, like it would be on an "A+" block, but over metal with no threaded hole.... (red circle) so you can't fit the nut/bolt that would be there on an A+

So what if it really was over fresh air. Would that matter? Oil on both sides as far as I can tell *wink*

The pin would fall out of the tensioner. Would matter quite a lot I think!

I was thinking if you didn't use a tensioner, but I can see your point :)

Sorry, now I am confused....hole or no hole?

I want to run a A+ tensioner on a pre A+ engine. I think I need the hole for the head of the pin.

The approximate location of the hole.

Turbodave, I think if I was running a pre A+ set up, you may be concerned of an oil leak because the hole would be under the edge of the timing chain cover... maybe leading to a gasket failure. Please let me know if people usually drill that hole for the tensioner.

Thanks, Mike

Hi Mike, Well, yes. Drill a hole in the appropriate location as you see fit.

The hole is definately required for the head of the pin otherwise the tensioner won't sit flat. the metal of the block behind the hole then supports the pin, keeping it in the tensioner.

But why so large ??? The head of the pin and the arc it moves in as you swing the tensioner is small compared to the hole....

The other issue I mentioned yesterday - because I had only seen it for myself for the first time - doesn't apply in your case anyway...

On my PRE A+ block there is a lump of casting that would have prevented the fitting of the extra cover nut/bolt. On the A+ setup, all the bolts either screw into threaded holes in the plate or go through the plate into threaded holes in the block, except the "eleventh" - from the factory, this was a nut and bolt and as you can see, would not have fitted on my early block. That lump of casting isn't on the A+ blocks and isn't on yours. Possibly a difference in the small/large bore castings.

Schrödinger's cat - so which one am I ???
