Following from my thread the other day about hinges.....

Took it to bits to get to the hinges to see if I could repair them, I then found out they were screwed. In a shitty bit of design I had to take the thing almost entirely to bits to get to the hinges.

So I put laptop back together, and it boots up and works, however as it warms up it starts to get incredibly slow, and starts throwing up and error message - "Warning - Cooling system problem detected. Please turn off the computer immediately and return it for service"

Oh poo.

I did remove the heatsink from the processor, but when I put it back I used some of that heatsink goo on it. I didn't clean the old stuff off first, should I have done? The cooling fan is running, and I cleared all the dust out of the fins (it was chocka).

As before it is a Toshiba Satellite Pro A40.

Anyone any idea where to start?

Sounds like you need to whip it apart and double check the thermal 'goo'. Should always remove the old stuff, and you want to use as little as you need, not too much

Cleaned it off, put a VERY thin skim on, fired laptop back up, it is still throwing up error message, but doesn't seem to have slowed down now. Bastard thing. Even more annoying is my household insurance with extra accidental cover specifically doesn't cover broken laptops thrown down the stairs. Bugger.

Thanks for the offer Mike, to be honest its really on its last legs, and if I hadn't just bought a new battery for it I would cut my losses, the hinges are fcuked and now it is overheating it seems, perhaps it has blown the head gasket LOL. I'm thinking of trying to salvage it with a second hand version of the same thing that isn't quite as fucked, so see below as you might know the answer.

If I were to buy another identical second hand laptop from the bay of E, exact same model, could I just swap the HDD from my knackered laptop into it, and it would take all my files etc? Or is there other shit stored somewhere that would mean I can't do this? In other words, if I swap my hard drive into another identical laptop, will the "new" laptop then function the same as my knackered one did??

I've found for example an identical version, with no power supply (have), no CD/DVD drive (have) and only 256Kb RAM (I have an extra 1 GB to slap in.)

I've been to PC World and Comet tonight to price up, but I could do without spending £4-500 on a new laptop at the moment.

I'm now using our gerts machine, mine will run for about 15min before it shits itself, luckily most of my files etc are on my external HD.

Yes you can put the hard drive into a similar machine and it will work the same. Do you want me to put some large scuff marks on the new one? :)

Thats good news, I'll see if I can strike a deal for this s/h one then. Scuff marks I can probably do without LOL Whatever happened to that trike anyway?

So the saga continues, its still acting up, but on the plus side I've a £12 set of new hinges coming.

It still says it is overheating and keeps throwing the error message up. it only starts to throw the error up after about 10 mins use, when it also goes mega slow.

My question is; is it going slow because it genuinely IS hot, or is it making itself go slow because it thinks it is hot??

I've more or less resigned myself to getting a new one in the sales after Xmas, but I would like to salvage this one if poss for mapping and general garage duties, as with the new hinges fixed and a recent battery it should be quite handy, if this overheating doodah can be sorted.

I'm wondering if it perhaps DID get too hot when I had too much goo on, and now has latched this fault up somewhere and this is why it keeps throwing this error at me.

Thoughts please chaps?

i did the same with my last laptop, it was an Advent, after about 7 months the hinges cracked, i took it apart and put the heatsink back on but not fully straight and it never worked again :( also there were thousands of little screws all over the place!

Can you mock something up externally to help cool it? Something along these lines maybe?

It is a Celeron 2.8 GHZ processor, the heatsink is on with the goo, and the fan is working. The most annoying things is that the heat exchanger bit was clogged full of dust, and I cleared that out, thinking it would run cooler afterwards.

Tom,

i'm pretty sure that there is special goo for cpu's rather than the normal heatsink goo.

Unfortunately it was the special CPU goo I got off ebay a while ago for ignition amp use.

I've not tried that, but even when it starts throwing errors up, the copper tubes from the heatsink to the exchanger fins that the fan blows through are barely warm to touch.

Tom did you get your laptop sorted? If your stuck, I know a guy at a company who sells ex-lease laptops. Usually around the £150 mark for a Dell with Pentuim Mobile/Centrino, 512MB Ram, 40GB+, Wireless, CD-RW.

Nothing special but if your interested I'll try to get in touch with him.

If something is worth doing, it's worth doing half of.

Thanks for the thought, I've bitten the bullet and bought a new one thats coming next week, but I may try and get the old one repaired for mapping/garage duties.
