hooray its up and running!
its finished in time for silverstone, which was my aim.
it smoked a fair bit when it first started up, it was white smoke by the way, but its all cleared up now, must have just been burning oil etc from the exhaust and other parts. i hope!
runs really well, its only a standard turbo engine but i'm well pleased with it!
it would have taken a hell of a lot longer if it wasn't for all the advice i've had from all you guys, so cheers!

give it another cold start (i.e. after leaving it over night) and pray it doesnt white smoke again

was much better today!!!
it still puffs a little smoke out when pulling away in first gear but nowhere near as much as it was.
just a few small probs now to sort out , the indicators have packed up and the horn dont work!

nice one :) .. if you have a realy old mini and are fed up with replacing the metal tin flasher units, il tel you how to wire in a modern flasher unit.. done it to 2 minis already :)

no need on this car as its a 94 model and it has the flasher unit that looks like a relay, by the way it was a dodgy connection on the fuse box.
your idea could be handy to know as i also have a 85 mini that has those tin flasher units!

yeah tell me too. my indicators are constantly fucked. well, when its on the road anyway :)

dead easy :) go to halfords, look at the black plastic flasher units (these have a wee 555 timer IC and a relay inside them. i.e. bulletproof)

find a 3 pronged one, look at the back of the packet, it wil have an equivalent "b = pin such and such" "L = pin such and such" and the other ones an earth!

wire up the "b" and "l" as per usual, hook up a good earth and thats u!, costs £10 ish but worth it as totaly reliable.

if you loose the card for whatever reason, u can pop into halfords and look at one on the shelf! or wright it on the unit!
