Not very sunny swanage

im perfectly capable of using the search button, so no smart comments please....

just a couple of quickies, i got my box from minispeed, (my first and last purchase from there) and got some really dubious hand drawn instructions on how to fit the box. the actuall fitting doesnt phase me to be honest, im more that capable of looking at pictures and workijg things out but....

on my instruction drawing it says im supposed to weld a flat strip to the back of the subframe and bolt through this to the car. (they tried to sell me this actually, i decided it was a expensive strip of metal that i would make myself if it was needed)

it also says that i need to weld in two gussett plates, one on ech side triangulating between the crosbar of the subframe and the tower. and another angled gussett strip under the crossbar.

Im reall sorry for the crap descriptions, and my lack of scanner so you lot cant see what im on about, tho i could fax it to anybody who might be able to scan it and put it up here?

basically do i really need to do this? more to the point i suppose, has everyone else done this?

Sorry, my quick questions seem to be long ones now!! oh well!!

Nope i havent bothered. know exactly what you mean though, basically rigidly fixing the back of the subframe to the toe-board.

If the box is seam welded in well i wouldnt personally bother. depends if you want to go the belt and braces approach! *smiley*

I agree though, think they want about ?15 for a piece of flat bar!

i bolted my subframe to the car; got a flat piece of stainless steel and cut it to the length of the flat part of the subby then bolted it to the toeboard in three places. my subby is fully solid mounted also and bulkhead box is full seam welded. didnt bother with the triangular pieces though.

My subframe is stock and bolted in the original mounting points only. I wouldn't bother with the 'belt and braces' approch personally...

I have my front subframe solid mounted, seam welded the bulkhead box in, and also have bolted the front subframe through the shell with a spacer bar between the subframe and bodyshell, and also some large plates inside the car to spread the load.
For the work involved (hardly any!) I thought it was probably worth it, although I didn't bother with the subframe triangulation plates.....

Edit......

PS I used a length of ally bar dimensions (approx) 8mm by about 30mm by approx 300 long......but you are right, don't go paying ?15 for it and personally I would not weld it to the subframe either, just bolt through it.

The very first car we converted we used an alloy strip i think 1" x 3/4" by 10" long and this was used as a subframe/bulkhead brace but found it not necessary.
Just use the various comp subframe bush kits/alloy/solid subframe mounts, not forgetting to use large penny washers under the floor mounts.Never ever had to seam weld a front subframe!!!
