I was driving the other day and pulled off a main road onto the lanes and the car lost power and wouldn't pull at all unless above 3500 rpm, even then it was sounding rough. I limped it home and today have checked the leads, distrubutor, changed the plugs and made sure valves ect are all moving with one another.

There is no mayonase in the the rocker cover and the water level is fine so I am wondering if it may have gone between cylinder 2 and 3.

The thing is I gave it some serious welly and it seems to clear from about 4500 - 6000 rpm and pull normally, which makes me think it may be the distributor.

I have just got back to uni and thinking about it should have done a compression test, but I didn't.

I'm currently thinking its possibly electrical. I do also get large backfire flame out the back of the exhaust when costing down, which almost strikes me that the distrubutor is retarding for some reason.

Any thoughts?
Thanks

Could just be damp, my 997 Cooper engine does the same without WD40 sprayed liberally on the ignition

Paul

I seriously doubt it!

Well, finally got home and did a compression test on it today, i'm getting 200psi on cold from all cylinders so thats good.

Its definately ignition related. I can't even be arsed to fix it with the dizzy anymore, I'm gonna hurry up and get megajolt on it.

it may just be carb freezing up if it was cold, you normally get bad running after a burn up if it is cold.

always looking for them bigger bunches of bannanas

well, I think something is amiss somewhere, I changed the distributor and it is still running bad.

Either there could be some crap stuck in the carb, the carb has unbalanced itself, the timing chain seems loud on idle, or something more serious has happened.

I have a video of it running, and the timing chain region of the engine sounds a bit rattly at 1000rpm but anything more sounds normal. I don't know if thats standard for high lift cams and rockers though.

sorry for the video quality, it didn't pick the light up well.

Does not sound good !
I would take the timing cover off to have a look before driving it any further.

Oil pressure is spot on

I am going to double check the valve clearences again.

Oh, angus it has the kind of dowel type adjustable duplex timing chain. I didn't like it when I bought it, and should have gone for a verneer.
