I have an mg metro rocker cover that I wish to replace the std pressed steel one with however it is a bit of a mess, has some paint on it and also is pretty dirty and dull. ive given it a good clean with petrol and its not much better.

Do not use caustic soda on anything aluminium based (or plenty of the other "alloys") as you will result in..... nothing !!!, ie, nothing left to look at....

These have got a clear coat on to protect them, which goes yellow and starts to flake off after time.
