A vernier could be an option. They generally have a depth gauge.

thanks jason, i thought about a vernier but wasn't sure how accurate. how much should i be looking at for mitutoyo. i have been looking at moore and wright |

They are on par, if not better than moore & wright.

I bought a set of digital verniers from halfords the other week, 15 quid i think they were.

And if you want greater accuracy than your thinnest feeler gauge, find an "old skool" engineer/technician who smokes roll-ups.....
