A vernier could be an option. They generally have a depth gauge.
I know mitutoyo veriners have gone down it price and are accurate

They are on par, if not better than moore & wright.

Edit...realistically nearer 0.1mm accuracy

I bought a set of digital verniers from halfords the other week, 15 quid i think they were.

Internal, external and depth measurement.

Digital gauge makes reading it much easier

i wanted to measure the surface depth on my block and head once it had been machined to ensure it was level

What do you mean by surface depth ???

Do you mean deck height to pistons ?

Schrödinger's cat - so which one am I ???

the top surface area between each bore

Do you mean those areas relative to the rest of the face just to make sure it's truely flat ???

If so a decent straight edge (ie, steel rule) and feeler gauges would suffice.

Or have I got it wrong again.....

And if you want greater accuracy than your thinnest feeler gauge, find an "old skool" engineer/technician who smokes roll-ups.....

The different "coloured" Rizzlas (sp?) are all defined thicknesses and all thinner than the smallest feeler gauges.

An old skool engineer will remember what thicknesses they are (I can't, I gave up smoking 25 years ago..)

Cut strips and use as feeler gauges in reverse, ie, lay the paper where you want to measure, put the straight edge on top and see if you can pull the strip out without it tearing.

If you're checking a block face, you really need a long straight edge to be able to check end to end as well as side to side.
