ok, just thought id share this with people as it seems not everyone realizes how stupidly easy it is to steal most cars.
and how stupidly easy it is to stop somone stealing the car wether thay have the keys or not *happy* now im puting this up as no one else has and i went to the scrapy yesterday and theres 3 stolen saxo vts, i happen to like these so i recon its a shame that its now sat on the stack due to some little chavy muppet *Punch* *Shooting*
so all you need is a 50p heater type switch in either the ignition, fuelpump or starter wiring. all 3 would be better and in a mini a battery cutoffs usefull. you can put these switches anywhere around the car, under dash where it can only be felt ect if you wanted you could rig this into existing swithes ect as long as its all well enought hidden in the wiring itl take a auto electritian ages to find. a switch to kill the coil if you have one will also work as well as sensor feeds such as crankshaft, dizzy, coil pack wiring ect,
this is easy to do and very hard to find

I done similar with my mini. I had a switch under the rear seat in the ignition live circuit. I also had a big bastard lock as a deterant

I still like keeping the Mini in the garage with a couple of tons of volvo parked across the garage door.

Very common mod. People have been doing it since switches were invented. I have been a little more inventive.

My mate wired his starter relay through the brake test switch. You had to press it and turn the key to start it.

I always thought for us turbo boys that putting a valve in the lean-off pipe would be a good idea. Open the valve when you leave the car. It'll start, but it won't go anywhere.

That's what I do, but it only works if I'm there.

That said, none of my minis work so....

Yep, very common mod I have an isolation switch on my fuel pump. I don't see how this will stop it being winched onto a low loader though.

And if they cant nick it, they usually ruin the interior for you as a thanks.

I'd rather they just took the car tbh.

got to say, my main concern is the car being lifted when it sits up at the farm. Luckily there is someone around most of the time to chase them off but it will only be a matter of time. The only way I could stop them whoulds be to set the car in concrete and these buggers will likley turn up with a kango hammer

so to sum up, if you dont want to have your car stolen, immobilise it?

whenever a car is stolen from my area its always taken down the same wee road, very steep and very twisty. i always leave the car set to high boost. obv it has security and im not saying what *tongue* but if someone does manage to nick it, i know i'll only have to walk down said road to see a nice graphic display of karma.

if leaving the car for a week or more, i remove the ecu!

if a scumbag wants it they will take it..

they came in for the keys for mine, so an immobiliser was no problem for them.

most new cars will require the keys to get it started so even with the best alarm etc in the world its still not safe as the alarm fob is probably with the keys.

The fuel cut off idea is ok.. but the last thing i would want to do is anger anyone attempting to take it, i wouldn’t want the shit bags coming back into my house asking why the motor just cut out, that can only end badly.

its only a car, let them take it and hope they do it quickly and not harming anyone.

basicaly...yes, but dont rely on the std equipment on modernish cars as its stupidly easy to bypass
to be honest i was expecting most of the regulars to have this built in allready, but i reakon the majority of people that are reading this thread dont have one

A cheap option is to hide on old mobile phone in the car, stick a pay as you go sim in, and wire in a charger to keep it switched on. You can then use equally cheap, online, mobile phone locator sites to track where you car is. It isn't as robust, or accurate, as a tracker, but it is a dirt cheap option.

You would have to make a call on the phone every so often to stop it being disconnected, but it is no great hardship.
