looking for a cheap way to do basic set up on the mins

got an old dunlop setup to do the tracking, but looking at cheap and cheerful camber/castor gauges to compliment like so..

the ADA from DT:




..but noticed these relatively cheap on ebay:



but not sure how these attach to the rim/hub? do you use an adapter to fit the wheel rim? could you just use the inside of the disc?

anyhow thats just details, but does anyone have any other recommendations bearing in ming im on a low budget and not fussed about settings to the n'th degree...

I would guess you just stick it to the centre of the wheel/hub.

id sort a decent rim adapter out if i got it, as it will probably get a fair bit of use

ape, alloy wheels werent magnetic when i last checked :) and how can i sit it on the hub when the wheels on?

The most difficult part is how to measure turning wheel to 20 degrees without using turnplates to do caster! The ADA has had some good results after all nothing to go wrong and you cannot beat gravity. Did some back to back tests after setting up mates seven and got comparable results with this ADA

Joe, the magnetic gauge would stick to your tracking gauges?

The lads that come to ours have 4 wheel lazer tracking gauges and it just sticks to the face, and like nick says you will need turn plates under the front aswell to check castor.

sorry carnt advise on actuall gauges as ive used neither.

You can certainly do camber with a spirit level, tape measure and calculator. Castor can also be done this way although its a bit more tricky.

How does the ADA compare in price to the MiniSpares version of the same thing?

Might as well take them out of my watch list now then!!

I used 2 floor tiles with a bit of grease between them for turnplates, a 6"digital spirit level and a bit of angle alloy to make it go rim/rim for camber and a bit of maths for castor. finally a digital caliper to measure with

Then used 4 axle stands and some string to set parallel lines alongside the car. I made sure the string was the same distance apart at the front and rear and that the distance to each wheel center was the same for both fronts and both rears (the track is different) using the calipers. This takes a while but I had nowt better to do!!

Then you can take measurements using the calipers from the string to the wheelrims front and rear to get the tracking, use the digital level to get the camber. finally I turned the front wheels 20 degrees each way and noted the camber and used maths to work out the castor..

Cheap, reasonably accurate but very time consuming..

I saw a video on youtube the lad used 2 floor tiles with a bit salt between them it seemed to work a treat.

I bought this kit at my local garage when they stopped service cars…a brown envelope with £200 and the kit was mine, a lot of garages have switched to laser so there must be tons of "old school" stuff out there

If you have an iPhone of iPod you can use the free iHandy Level application as an accurate digital level. I tried it on my Mini last night and it worked very well. Be sure to calibrate it first on a flat surface.

I have, what do you want to know?

I use one, theyre not spot on accurate but good enough for what I do. Simple enough to use, though I have to read the instructions atleast twice every time I use them.
