hi all, when i set my car up to the metro turbo factory ignition timing setting it doesnt run that well.....ive advanced it a few degrees and it is a lot better.....my question is,until i get to a rolling road for a full set up could i advance it until i get pinking and then turn it back gradually until the pinking stops....or is this a bad idea or not the ideal setting???

regards mark

I set mine at 17deg and it advances to 25deg, all engines are different but locking the advance weights in the distributor (something i need to do) and setting it at about 20deg should be fine until you get to the rollers.

Oh by the way mine was 17deg at tick over (no vacuum advance) 25deg is in by 3000rpm i believe!!

beware fixed advance low down can cause detonation also !
25-27 total (at 5000 rpm) and more boost usually means less advance - measure from flywheel as the pulley mark can be out - use a vacuum unit for safe advance to improve driveabillity (advances untill boost comes in )

i dimagine its not so much that they retard under boost, jsut advance under vacuum. my understanding is that the vac advance at pressures greater than atmospheric, has no effect.

I'm sure i heard they retarded from some where, but you know what some peoples ideas are like, it could be wrong.

yep its that simple when theres vacuum theres extra advance to get things going , as the boost comes in it reverts (retards) back to the standard mechanical advance - just set ignition timing up with vac disconected , then reconect

I'm about to start my engine for the first time. When running the engine on the starter motor, how many degrees should I see with a standard turbo dizzy?
Mark?

jsut swing it until the engine starts and go from tehre?! thats how i have always done it with the electric dizzy, as you cant set it up without the engine running.

I've now tried setting the ignition to 7 degrees on 1500rpm as suggested with no vac, This was not very good at all, as the engine refused to take any throttle.

The Metty turbo manual says 9-10 degrees on 1100 rpm. Also, Mark told me that the dizzy goes to 25 degrees all up.

What do you guys run?

The dizzy is a standard Metro turbo as far as I know.

i ran mine at 12degrees @ 1500 no vac for ages and it was fine, since the rebuild i ran it at 8 degrees and it started pinking at full chat at avon so knocked it back down to 4 now and all seems fine.

Not really no. What it will do is make the car less economical when at steady speed. Leave it alone.

that "12degrees @ 1500 no vac" just meant that timed it up with the vac advance disconnected....then re-connected it afterwards, not ran without it.
