right i 've ot the engine and front subframe assembly out of my new car and i was looking at it today and thought i might as well get on with doing some kind of turbo engine now or i'll never do it, so here's the plan.
998 engine with centre main strap toughend crank plus what ever else is needed to make it stronger.
pocket the block to fit the turbo cylinder head Will that work ???
use the t3 because thats what i have right now maybe get a t2 sorted for it.
and a rebuilt standard gearbox.
seems like a plan, just need toknow whether you guys reckon it will work?
also are the bulkhead boxes from minispares any good? i am guessing they are all pretty much the same,
cheers in advanced

GO FOR IT!

I think all boxes are similar... I used a mini spares one and it was ok.

what about using the atndard metty turbo head with a pocketed block, i reckon it will need a skim becasue the CR will be way too low otherwise but other than that will it work and give results or is it just a case of suck it and see?

Sold the turbo and seeing what the C20XE can do!

Near Lincoln

Low CR is a good thing remember (within reason)

Wil H is the 998 man, try putting something in the title like 998 turbo and im sure he'll comment *smiley*

Yep the 998 turbo we run has a slightly modified MG metro head on with a pocketed block. We run about 7.3:1 compression ratio and acheive this by having 7cc dished pistons and opening out the chambers in the head. Not sure what the compression ratio will be like just putting the head on but I am running a NA 998 with an MG metro head on (without a skim & pocketed block) and the compression ratio is quite low but not turbo low.

Have you thought about a cam?

i pm'd wil a little while ago and he said he was running a kent 500 with 1.5 rockers, i'll probably start on something like that because it is already proven, maybe i'll only use the standard rockers or some 1.3's as its for road.
i have an old 998 its an a series, not a+ so the comp ratio is already 8.3:1 or something like that apparently, i don't want to go much lower than that because it needs to be driveable off boost.

i was also trying to work out what sort of power to expect, wil has about 100 bhp doesn't he?
mine is gonna be milder than that so does 70-80 seem out of the question??

A 1 litre turbo is a interesting project to try and build, but I have to ask, if you are looking to get 70 - 80 bhp, would it not be easier to pop in something like an MG Metro engine with a stage one kit and there you have your 80 bhp?
I thought that the guys out there with the 1 litre turbos have them to fit into a competition capacity limit?

Don't get me wrong I do not want to sound defeatist, and fair play for having a go and good luck, but I was having a think and the main problem I can see is getting the HIF44 carb (sized with a jet size to suit a 1300) fuelling right to suit the smaller capacity....I am sure it is achievable but for 80 bhp is it worth the effort?

yeah that is a good pint but hey, why not have a go to be different!
if ts really that bad i can try something else, its just more experience at the end of the day.
anything can be done with a bit of work i guess.
and i also have nearly everything sat in the garage to do this, i don't have a complete 1275 mg metro lump and ancillaries,
the thing is i want to get some turbo experience whilst building my 1293 because at the end of the day bits for a 998 are cheap if they break.

i know its not anything to with the size of the jety but wouldn't a well modified needle and rolling road cancel out the problems of the jet size by optimising the fuelling for my engine??
i don't really know just a thought.

I suppose if you started off with something like a needle from a bog std 1300 economy metro which is quite a thick needle, and then file it down bit by bit on the rollers you will get there eventually.....might need to spend a good few hrs on the rolling road though.....

Again fair play for having a go, just thought as you were talking about a t2 turbo centre main strap and a special cam and rockers you may as well spend that cash on the 1300 turbo.
I am sure there must be people with a 1300 short engine you could use as a basis out there for cheap money.

i can transfer almost everything on to the 1.3 when its done, so its not really a waste of money. its all experience anyway, i'm itching to get a turbo mini on the road!!
