I have been doing some searching but really i thought it would be nice for somone to explain why fuel additives are needed in simpleton terms.

Is it purly to increase the octane rating of the fuel??

Im not really sure how it all works and thought to post in here so others can learn from it :)

I use additives for two reasons:

1) To increase the octane rating of the fuel, allowing more boot and higher CR

and

2) I don't have unleaded heads/valve seats. So it protects the seats.

i see, i didnt realise you could run with a higher CR like that, does it create a cooler burn, as i geuss it will be more efficiant.

yeah, think of Octane as the feuls ability to resist detonation.

Yeah, with 'x' CR and 'x' octane you can run 'x' amount of boost.

If you increase the octane, you could increase boost or the CR or both (depending on what you wanted your engine to do).

I use Millers & Shell Optimax fuel in the Metro.
Knew about valve seats, but never thought about higher CR etc.

+1 I use Millers Turbo addative, switched to this from their standard octane booster and the difference was instant, the engine was much quieter. However I use leaded 4 star in mine a bit rich at £1.24 a litre but reminds me of days of old*happy*

Anyone used the tetraboost stuff out of interest?
