Leading on from this post:

I've been told that if the designers and engineers want 64-bit systems, then it's a new machine. Which our ledger won't allow as the newest machine is 2 months old.

This confuses me a little, as the specs on both machines say it'll support upto 64bit:

So, am I right that it is an OS upgrade only? Or will they also need new chipsets? I'm just looking for ammunition as the folks who will make the descisions know as much as me, and are being told by the minnions that the ONLY way these can be changed to 64-bit is with full replacement of the unit.

Maybe the IT guys don't know how to install an OS... Or it's probably due to company policy because these are 64-bit processors.

YAY!

IT manager has - after being supplied facts which I'm thankfull to you guys for - pushed his minions on this, and he has now come back saying there is no reason why we can't upgrade the HP units (the current corporate computer supplier) wtih 64bit.

I think comparing this whole scenario as "buying a 2009 corvette, then pulling out half the spark plugs and driving it in that state" worked pretty well :)

Cheers all!
