Hi

My computer seems to have been influxed with a whole load of shit for some reason in the last week. To the point that today it has disabled windows task manager. And put a big banner on the back of the desktop advertising that the computer has been attacked with viruses and trojans (whatever the fuck they are)

I have been using the internet a lot in the last 10 days reserching a for an assignment and I just wonder if I have been unlucky with a website I have hit. (que jokes about porn websites!)

I have McAfee antivirus software which doesn't seem to have picked up what has been trying to attack it.

I'm still getting pop ups as well that I dont want, even with the pop up blocker set to not allow anything through. But obviously on all normal websites if I click a link I have to click 'temporarily allow pop ups

Is there anything I can use to sort this out before I contact a computer tecchy guy I know to try to sort it out?

Thanks.

It seems there are a lot of viruses on the rampage at the moment.

First go to Start
Then Run
Type msconfig
hit enter
Then go to Startup Tab

Untick any dodgy looking Startup files.

Be careful what you untick tho as you can cock $hit up.

Then download Adaware. Do a clean.

Then Download Hijackthis. Do a clean.

This should rid theee of thy septic woes.

Giving you all the tricks of the trade here man.

Viruses are rife at the moment - McAfee seems to be missing a lot of them as well. If you can get to the AVG website and download AVG free then do that. Make sure you remove the McAfee though as you will get conflicts otherwise. Run a scan with the AVG and see what it picks up.

Viruses seem to be appearing quicker than companies can get definitions out at the moment so there are a lot that are getting past the usual anti-virus programs.

IMO Avg is good for Stopping Viruses getting in, but not at cleaning them up.

This is one of the most common problems i deal with in my spare time.

Also keep the AVG Up to Date. New viruses are created all the time.

Keeping it upto date goes without saying really. I've never had a problem with AVG stopping viruses as you say.

As for hijack this - I wouldn't recommend someone use it without knowing what they're doing really, but if your antivirus software isn't picking up the infections then there may not be many alternatives.

You can usually spot the dodgy bits and bobs, if unsure just leave them in is what i do.

Or Google the line.

minimole...I recommend you fly tip the PC and get a Mac, then you won't have any more virus trouble. I used PC's all my life until I left uni and started work... queue the sad cliche but once you go Mac, you'll never go back.
