edit: update on the radiator, got it fully welded and tested for leaks, found 3, 2 pin pricks in my welding and also 1 pinprick in the the rat bastards welds who built it *happy*

also who the hell decides to make end caps out of 0.8 mm aluminum i had a night mare trying to tig to that i think i ended up on about 30 amps and 20 seconds to get a weld pool going *happy*, also spent nearly 2 hours chasing a pin prick up and down one of the welds hahaha

today i attacked the dizzy, yes the dizzy, it always amuses me with the electronic ability of today ( i mean japs has coils on plugs 25 years ago )why they still use dizzys, anyway this one is fairly smart, inside there is a 24 tooth 'crank' sensor a 4 tooth piston tdc sensor and a 1 tooth cam phase sensor, a coil and the distribution section ( rotor arm and stuff)

now because im going to be running coil on plugs and full sequential injection and spark i dont need the 4 tooth tdc sensor the coil or the dizzy but i do need the 24 tooth and the 1 tooth

so i decided to take this baby for a little spin... in my lathe *happy*
the first pic shows the size of the bloody thing... look at it !!

internals of it

stripped, thats the 24tooth and 4 tooth sensors left in but because there is no way to relocate the 1 tooth wheel i will have to make do with removing 3 of the 4 teeth on the 4 teeth wheel not a great problem

the sensor wheels

typically the picture of it cut wont load
so ill cut to the the welded pic, i think that bit i added was 8mm thick 50mm wide and i bent it around an inner pot joint with a 13lb hammer *happy*

after abit of lathe work

a bot more lathe work later and the bearing plate and toothed wheels can be test fitted

perfect

and then made a start of the new end cap and bearing holder
rough cut, very rough cut for some reason this aluminum bar doesnt lathe too well
so i think a new cutting tool is required , or rather a new shape

polished up this will be sexy as hell *happy*

bit more on the crank angle sensor
Vr sensors fitted

the to trigger wheels, still got 4 teeth on the cam sync wheel, i need to sit down and calculate if there is an optimum position for the cam sync tooth

wire grommet needs a little trim for the new case

perfect !!

all built up, i will bench test this with MS3 before trying it on the car lol

not sure how to finish off the end plate, id like to cover those 3 screw holes and also the center one, not exactly needed i dont think no liquid or dirt can get in
i might make another smaller center end plate and screw it on from the inside i might also look to see if i can get a sticker or something

i fancied having this polished and anodized but im finding whilst polishing up the casting the finish isnt great so im going to just paint it

ill get side by side pics and weight when i swap them over *happy*

jobs a good 'un

Cheers Robert,

Dave what i have done is turn a crank , cam , piston position sensor , coil and distributor ( all in one unit) into just a crank / cam sensor, binned everything i dont need and modified the casing to be as small as i could

the new coils turned up the other day, trying to get a set of coil on plug coil packs long enough to reach down into the head onto the spark plugs was difficult, i could have used the newer K series vtec coils but i have heard that these start failing around 15psi boost
my first choice was the audi coils 1.8t press fits or the 2.0t bolted ones the 2.0t are also the same as the R8 but i could not get my hands on one to measure
i still may swap to the audi coils if these turn out to be shit

i got my hands on some bmw coils from a 7 series straight 6 with loom for 30 and they measured up to be just about long enough

anyway -

the coils next to the old ht lead ends

the coils detaches from there stem.. excellent

as it happens they are long enough but the coil ends up too close to the head to get any real mounting on them, i thought about wedging them in and pinning them down with the coil cover
i also made a 1 inch space to fit on the top of the spark plug but reasoned that i couldnt get enough insulation around it to prevent it arking to the head
so not liking those ideas much i decided to cut open the stem of one of the coils ( i have 2 spare why not)

turns out inside is just a clip and a long spring that goes the plug,
so i cut open one of the old ht leads and there is a spark plug clip on the end,
so these are going to get built into one unit, slightly longer

urgh, why dont i just buy stuff that fits *happy*

top right clip for the coil pack, bottom clip for the spark plug

close up

4 spark plug clips relieved of the ht lead

some brass i wanted pure copper core but this is all i could get locally, its 65ish % copper and apparently used in most ht lead ends anyway ( says google)

i bet i can machine that end in this brass rod, and reuse the spring clips... tomorrows job

if anyone has a 1.8t or 2.0t audi coil just hanging around doesnt have to work just be in one peace and would like to donate it my way, Please Feel Free *tongue*

brett, I can ask at the garage RE the coil but it will likely need postage cost; if you can get something local, all the better

excellent mate, thanks alot,

more Coil on plug updates

this clip end was really easy to replicate into some 6mm brass rod, drilled 4mm wide 5.45mm deep with a slit on one side, fitted with the clips from the original coil stem

then cut to size with the sparc plug clip slid over the end

x4
these fit right down the original cop tube and clip onto the coil on one end and the spark plug on the other

the rubber bands help the longer stem to fit tight against the head, removes any potential vibration i just needed them to be a little tighter and couldnt think of anything better than Duck tape *happy*

fitted through the original plug cover here but the cover is a flexible type plastic, tomorrows job is to remake this out of aluminium

on them vag coils (what i run) the very bottom of the coil *just* grips over the hex part of the sparkplug. the working guts of the coil extend down a little into the perforated bit IIRC. incase your thinking of modifying them :)

ohh right, that makes them very short then doesnt it? might have to bin that idea

still researching what the high power s2000 / k series engines use coil wise, it seems alot move the the b series ht leads and use big coilpacks :(

i want coil on plugs lol

i actually want to run these little beauties ( R8 coils but im reluctant to fork out untill i can get some solid dimentions )

I'm pretty sure the r8 coils are the same as the 2.0tfsi coils out of the mk5 golf or similar
