Righto. A lot of you guys run straight cut drops. Most say they sound great but are noisy. Also a techical advantage over helical. I have never been in a mini with straight cut drops (i have heard plenty go past) and soon may need to fit them to my mini. I am worried about the noise - If the car gives me a headache I will not want to drive it every day to work etc?
So... peeps that drive straight cut drop gear minis most days- is the noise toleratable ( have I made up that word?) I have my stereo on anyway at a moderate level so if that drowns out the gear noise, then all ok. How noisy?

a LIL fishing village on the coast - Newcastle Upon Tyne

the sc drops guard against side loading which tends to kill off hellacles, if you go for a 24 tooth setup rather than the 23 its slightly quieter, and i have also heard that the timkin idlers help reduce noise slightly.

as for overall noise it is not intrusive IMHO and to be fair if your engine spec is so great it requires SC drops and an X pin diff you wont be worried about headaches because you will be screaming everywhere.

a good indication of the sound is on Jims "VIDEO OF COMB" if you can find it, however he also has full SC gears so they are louder than stock, but it gives you the general idea.

Look at jimster moving stuff around, with his balls all shiny!

I was worried about my drops been knackered at first as they rattle while stood still. To bo honest there not as loud as id had thought they would. Any turbo motor needs SC imo.

Maybe this is the place for this question if not flame away.

The noise issue was always at the back of my mind when I decided to fit SC drops due to the fact the helical set-up killed my other gearbox. To try and reduce the noise and free play I shimed mine 1 thou under the the tolerence given, but they were noisy all the same to the point I took the engine out and fitted my donnar motor.

So my question. What gaps do you all set your drops to?

The shimming will make no difference to the noise, it is the backlash between the crude gear tooth profile that makes the noise.

Along the thought line I was going. So can the gaps be closed down to a few thou?

When I got mine there was no advice as to what gaps to set which I thought odd.

Someone on here mentioned not fitting a gearbox/block gasket and just using sealant and they said that quietened them down a bit.

Just watched the you tube vids. The straight cut noise was at the level I expected it to be - ie. louder than the exhaust.

I must say that since changing to the 2.95 diff the SC noise has dropped to a tolerable level.. Before that I was wondering if they were worth it.. But now they are staying.

It may be that as they bedded in they quietened down a bit, plus I re-shimmed them when I had the engine out.

The cooling fan makes quite a racket as well...so as someone said, I don't have a clue what my exhaust sounds like!

i have only the straight cut final drive fitted at the moment and it is not as loud as the straight cut transfer gears on their own, but together the can become ear numbing on a long drive. obviously a straght cut gearset woul add to this again

my old car was my daily drive with sc drops and box and that was fine noise wise. just turn the stereo up a bit, or fit a full width dash and some soundproofing behind it.

Just watched the metro. I could cope with that level of noise no probs. What sort of soundroofing do you have. It seems very efective. I have dynamat in my mini - not impressed.
