For the serious answer, I would say, what is your experience in building these engines ???

How many have you built, what specifications, whom for, how reliable have they been, etc.

And will anyone give references ???

But you could just look to eBay for examples of how much people are prepared to pay to a seller who can't even type in english....

See here,

well what sort of a build is he looking for?

standard replacement?

crazy competion/track car

weekend warrior?

traffic behaving road racer?

does he just mean your labour?

how long do you normally spend building your engines? (hours)

then at £15 per hour. (thats fucking cheap for him, and a damn good hourly wage for you)

as a one of thing you can really do without factoring in electricity/water/sundries (you could get away with a sundries charge, some people do some dont charge it. i mean tissues etc etc) thats why you can drop your hourly rate to what seems like dirt cheap to him.

then if he sniffs at thee fact your charging £15PH you can point out that an engine builder is going to be £40+ and well up for a good one. obviously there is the fact that they build them day in day out but he obviously doesnt want to pay that as he wouldnt have asked you otherwise and is obviously happy enough with your skills to trust you with it.

If I've translated this right...

"I know how to time cams in (set cam timing correctly) and ring gaps (and set ring gaps) and everything (well, there's an awful lot more to building and engine than "everything")..."

"But I've just got no idea how much to charge to build an engine for this person."

"He knows what I'm capable of (obviously not spelling) and how good I am."

I would suggest you tell him to look at this forum then, and after a few searches, he/she can make their own mind up.

To be honest, I wouldn't pay anyone to "build an engine" unless they had a proven track record of doing it and were respected by others on the forum for work already done.

That's why I do mostly my own work, and where I have to use a machine shop (ie, offset boring) I rely on others on the forum with proven experience, to tell me who they have used and how good they are.

If I was going to advertise myself as an "engine builder" for an "A" series turbo and ask the forum how much I should charge for my work, I would at least post up some relevant experience and customer satisfaction.

he pays for the parts, end of if he's a mate. you never know when you might need the favour returning

The thing is if you get someone to build an engine (say MED) then when built it comes with some back-up. so if it goes tits-up the buyer isn't out of pocket.

This is factored into the cost of all goods, if you're just building one engine you need to factor in 100% of the cost to cover yourself.

If you are building it at mates rates, then you do it at cost and maybe £5 an hour.

Finally, if you know what is needed to build the engine, i.e. machining, parts, time. It shouldn't take long to make a good stab at a price. I have just put a bid together for £100k worth of work, I knew nothing about the subject, but I priced it bit by bit, aproaching suppliers etc.

Dubble D I have built quite a few engines at this stage every one is different and is priced differently I work out my price on cost of parts, Labour and an admin fee I also offer a race back up service which is included in the price, It is quite complicated to work out pricing and I dont think anyone here is going to give a price you should charge

Your right Paul - for one its a contract with an indivudal and not one size fits all.

For another many people don't wish for those prices to be discussed on a forum.

I'd happly tell you what I charge per hour for general labour - but then the rate changes depending on the work - less for engines/restoration more for mapping/setting up!
