Right, I'm a bit of a computer spaz so need some help. I want a new laptop that I can do reports and projects forcollege on. I will also probably put the megajolt, LC1 and ETB dash software on it.

Requirements are:
Small and light
Less than €400
Wireless internet
Preferably XP as I'm scared of change

Hard drive space isn't really a concern but those little dells are taking the piss with 8GB! I think my phone has that.

This is fairly decent looking. Are the Jap's as good at making laptops as they are at making cars?

Any guidance would be much appreciated

I've had three Toshiba laptops now, and would recommend to anyone. First one got pinched, second one clapped out after 5 years use and too many sub 13 sec runs in the DON datalogging, (LOL, seriously!) so just before xmas I bought a Satellite L300 brand new from Comet, £340 I think it was. I'm really pleased with it, it does everything I need, is quick, battery life good, etc.

Thanks lads. Tom, that is the coolest way to break a laptop I've ever heard 8-) . Looks like the Toshiba would be a safe bet

what about a mini EEEpc from Asus.

I have an 8.9 inch screen one and it is great especially good for travelling and hopefully datalogging once the car is on the road. They are about 2-300 euros as well i think

I actually had a quick look at these and the Acer Aspire One. It has built in bluetooth which, even if I didn't use, sounds cool *tongue* Similar spec to the Toshiba and basically the same money

Hello,

There's a company on the wirral who do second hand laptops / PC's etc. They are called Recover IT.

They deal with the IT Equipment disposals that the banks / local councils make.

I buy loads of these per year to sell on and never have any problems and they do sell to the general public too.

I pay £140 for a 2 year old Dell laptop running XP, it comes with plenty of RAM, Wireless, case, serial port for megasquirt charger etc

If you dont want to play games on it, then they are fine.
If anyone would like their contact details please PM me.

Mike

PS im an IT Bod, so if any of you require IT Related Advice just PM me.

Dell laptops for me, nothing comes close to lasting as long. I've still got one from 2001 that gets used often.

Thanks for the input everybody.

Mike, I may PM you at the start of next week.

Alex, the Dell Inspiron Mini only has an 8GB memory which is a bit weedy. I think I could write more on a postage stamp. I do like Dell though. The one I'm using here is great. I've had it for 3 years without a single problem.

Wil, I will have a look at that site over the weekend. It looks promissing at first clance though.

I'm off to watch the WRC for the weekend so I will resume my research when I get home.

Thanks again

Dell for me as well, I have a D630 currently -- hard as nails, It goes everywhere with me, gets dragged out 5-10 times a day. it gets dropped on a regular basis and the dog stamps all over it. They last me about 2 years-- doesn't sound much but I give them a spanking

The first problem is usually with the hinges, catch them early and its cheap let them go and its a chassis.. next will be the charging socket.. I usually get through 2 chargers per laptop, the cables fray at the laptop plug

Terry

EDIT -- and it has a serial line output for the Megajolt..
