Help. Turbo is pissing oil out, looking down my exhaust I can see oil dripping out of the downpipe connection.

This is definatly the turbo as when I blank the turbo off with a plate ive made, no smoke, no oil.

Turbo has little play in it. I replaced the bearings and seals (thats a joke the seals are 2 washers one cold one hot side) put the clean and nicely spinning turbo on to find its smoking worse than before.

Only thing I can think is that the oil outlet pipe had a kink in it and this might have casued increase pressure in the turbo? but this is me guessing. ANY IDEAS ANYONE

Not east re-building turbos... Did you mic up the width and diameter of the groove in the turbine shaft that the 'piston ring style' seal fits into? Did you measure the bore that the seal locates in?
It's almost definately these seals... Turbo re-conditioning is something that I believe is under-rated in difficulty.

I'm inclined to agree dave, i think the best thing for turbo re-building is to buy the cartridge part as a fully balanced assembly then just bolt on your own housings at each end. I'm sure this would work out a fair bit cheaper than having the whole turbo sent away for reconditioning.

I think iain was enquiring on prices for replacement cartridges, i'll have a word tomorrow at work!

Sold the turbo and seeing what the C20XE can do!

Yeah havent had any replies as of yet though, ill try another avenue!

Has to be said though my turbo that i rebuilt seems to be fine...

only time will tell though but i got a "free" sample and the turbo was free so thought "why not!" end of the day it hasnt cost me anything *smiley*

To be honest though they're not that complicated. Only bit of concern is the balancing. I marked mine well and its quiet and smooth.
