Air filtration is a problem with an 8 port and a round nose, space is tight.

However Pipercross have a lot to answer for!!!!

So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...

I had a PiperX sock on the mini in the bad old days and that caused a lot of valve seat pitting on my then fancy 295 head. If you look at the courseness of the foam you can see why! I would only use an oiled cotton gauze from now on or a decent ITG. Plus people shouldn't run the socks that far down the trumpets as it reduces the filtration area by a lot.

I pick holes in everything..

The filters on that are:

1. Too small.
2. Mounted wrong.

I don't think that there is anything wrong with the foam itself.

Mine gets in the way a bit, but only when it is up. If it is down it does not cause a problem.

I have never run anything but a piperX filter. Fine for me.

Can an air filter really cause this? I'd have thought that grit would cause bore wear but not valve seat pitting, this is more likely owing to fuel/fueling issues.

As Ben says we've only ever used Piper X and had no problems.

Perhaps, but it coincided with me changing over to the sock filter.

I run a Piper Cross filter on my Metro, it is one you would normally use on the Weber/Dellorto 45 set up.

Ofcourse it is fitted to a modded plate and ram pipe with the addition on a lightweight alluminium cage to stop it collapsing. I do not know if if would collapse, it was just somethingthing I added for piece of mind.

I blame the mini owner for not thinking it through.

The owner has since burned and cast their ashes to the wind *hehe!*

The problem is the ram pipes are about 10mm from the front panel so the filters were fitted to fit neatly, not really knowing the effect it would have. Its not untill you get the car on a dyno that you can really see why its wrong to fit them this way. Also the engine was tuned without the filters then the filters fitted seeing a huge drop in torque. Their is no escaping a drop in torque even if they were fitted correctly, just maybe not as much.

On contrast. The K&N type filters I use without ram pipes give an increase in torque when fitted and a drop in torque when removed. Some sort of ram charching going on there!

Custom built composite box moulded around the passenger head light bowl, K&N cylindrical filter drawing air in where the louvre duct attached to the front panel. There is always away!
