Hi Guys,

I am just getting in to the turbo game and have got a 1984 Mitsubishi Starion. It's a 2.0l turbo engine and the original turbo is bust. Rather than re-condition the turbo, I want to upgrade to a more modern option. I am only after 250 to 300 bhp but it's more about reliability and quick spool up. Any suggestions on what turbo's might be worth a look?

Cheers

Ben

I don't know what turbo specifically. But if I was looking for turbo for a 2l car I'd be looking at modernold turbocharged motors that are commonly modified; so the old turbos are for sale cheap.

I guess I'm thinking Subaru, Evo, SAAB (maybe GT17) maybe even VAG 1.8T motors. 1.8 or 2l turbo motors are so common these days that there must be a massive choice.

well i know that generally the VAG boys upgrade from the k03 at around 180-200bhp up to the k03s found on the ibiza cupra r's and leon cupras. also the VAG 1.8t engines that are as standard over 200bhp have the k03s i believe.

to be honest. if you buying new i would look at the gt25 ball bearing turbos, but you might be reving it to get it too spool.

if looking secong hand i would be looking at Subaru impreza and mitsi evo turbos as wil says.

i thought the 2 ltr was the evo engine? as such look at the newer evo.

more importantly is it the wide body?

Cheers for the advice guys, much appreciated. Rich, yes it does have the original wheels and they look awesome, proper retro!

Turbo Shed...yeah it is the original base for the modern evo engine, you can actually fit an evo 8 head straight on to the starion block and only need to bore out one of the oil ways. If I had the money I would go down that road, but at the moment i just want to upgrade the turbo and look for a second hand modern alternative. You could be right on going for a later model Evo turbo. Oh btw...it's the narrow body version, i know the wide body looks more race, but apparently they don't handle as well as the narrow body and the 2.6l engine in the wide body is prone to cracking heads. I'll keep you posted on progress, joeybaby has thrown a few books at me about turbo's so I can learn the ropes.

Rich, yes the alloys are quality, proper 80's amazingness

Hes not buying new, as Wil says were looking for a 2nd hand unit preferably one that comes as std on a modern factory car

in short, the turbo is spaffing oil out everywhere, and rather than spend hundreds reconing the old badboy, and keeping a 25 yr old design, he may aswell find a decent 2nd hand modern water cooled turbo that will spool up quicker and more efficient/reliable.

I did suggest a gt17 might be a good choice, as i know it can flow enough air etc, is reasonably available, and can be gotten relatively cheap off saab 95's, but were ruling nothing out at the mo, any thoughts would be appreciated

maybe a std turbo of a modern evo might be an idea ben? might even bolt straight on?

make an adaptor and fit a T28 off a pulsar. these are awesomely under-rated turbos, and GT28*** are all a direct bolt in replacement so should you wish to experiment in future you havnt waisted time making the adapter / downpipe :)

turbo 16v k-series 11.9@118.9 :)

I still have the knight rider light somewhere...it will be re-installed due to popular opinion. I already have the ridiculous hoff style hair so just need to install KIT now the complete the set!
