Hey guys, can anyone tell me what torque setting i need for the driveshaft retaining nut (disc type) and does it have to be backed off at all?
Cheers

if its the x holed drive shaft its 150lbft plus what ever to get it to the next hole on the castle nut, if its the single hole drive shaft its 200lbft +

but i have just gone to check

EDIT:
153 lbft double hole, or 207nm
188-199 lbft single hole, or 255-270nm

out hanyes:)

TBH I'd torque it to the correct setting and turn it to the nearest hole whether it be clockwise or anti otherwise you could end up with some rediculously high torque setting to get the holes aligned....learned this the hard way on the way to Newquay! *hehe!*

These are not taper roller bearings like other old front wheel applications.... you aren't settting an end float, there is a spacer between the two bearings (or some have extended inner races to touch each other) so you are just clamping the whole assembly up, clearance already decided by the manufacturers.

It has to be a high torque because the diameter of the shaft is small so the threads are coarse :)

Schrödinger's cat - so which one am I ???

Once you have tightened the nut up so far you aren't really putting any more load on the bearings, as this is controlled by the inner races butting up hard against the spacer in the middle.

Turbophil had a butt plug made that seemed to be suitable. He may have finished with it now and have it kicking around spare

I might be thick but.....

I've never understood how the number of holes in the CV nose should alter the torque required - the rest of the assembly is the same.

If it is down to the risk if the end of the CV joint shearing when there are two inersecting holes then if 150lbft is OK for that application why does it need to be higher for only one hole?

sweet, been looking for this thread for 20 mins

replaced the hubs on the mini tonight with refurbed oned (new bj's and bearings) an on the way home i can hear a bit of a very soft grinding from front o/s wheel

i was worried ive over tightened the driveshaft nut (gave it death, then more death to the next hole), but the spacer is in there, so this shouldnt be the case.

there jam packed with bearing grease , so im a bit lost as to what the noise will be from?

surely cant be the bj's as it happens when coasting in a straight line?

any thoughts?

Sounds like a bearing, does it increase when going round a corner?

Or are they only when cornering, I can never remember.

it seems to do away when cornering to he right, and stay present when cornering left, i.e. when the weight is on the osf?

hmmmm
