I'm just curious...
What does a healthy, but basically stock 1600CVH turbo engine make with the usual 'stage 1/2' conversions...

Also, any idea what 1/4 times they put out in various spec's?

as std they are slow...

but a chip and some more boost see's up to 200 bhp on a stock engine. After that it gets more expensive.

1/4 mile times are always fairly slow as they have very poor traction!!

As std I think the book figure is 132 bhp. As alex said they are not especially fast as std cars.
A mate of mine used to be well into them, his had I think a hybrid turbo and different cam and head, and made approx 190bhp from memory. In the dry if you were careful with your right foot it was an impressive car, I remember one day we out-accelerated a 16v Mk2 Golf like the Golf was standing still. In the wet you could have climbed out and run faster. Also it handled like a bag of poo through the twistys.
Although it has to be said that the same mate upgraded to an E30 M3 and was very disappointed with how slow the BMW felt after the Escort......although the handling was something else.

I should hope so
but the escort would spank the valver round bends and roundabouts *wink*

Do you think so?
When I drove it, I thought it was a horrendous understeering mess and the golf would have been long gone by the time you had arsed about trying to get the escort through anything more than a gentle curve.....

When I said "In the wet you could have climbed out and run faster. Also it handled like a bag of poo through the twistys" I was refering to the Escort not the Golf.......

I had a race with 2 Escort cosworths and a sierra cosworth in my E46 325 sport BMW (steptronic) a short while ago, it ended up being between myself and the most modified escort running side by side at 149mph (155mph by the escort's speedo). We both had to back off when we came up against other traffic. At the end of the day, it was just an escort, he had more BHP and torque than me but they ain't built for out and out speed, they are built and geared for rallys which is about handling and acceleration. No doubt it would have beaten me on a standing start with it's power to weight ratio but it opened his eyes a bit. I heard that he has now sold his escort and bought a BMW! *happy*

i definitely be a bit dubious about someone claiming 200bhp just with a chip, i've had a erst in the past, and my mate at work had an extensively worked frst with 2.1zvh and still only managed 220bhp.

while he was running the 1.6 cvh, pace intercooler, larger injectors, 190 chip etc... he was actually pulling 144bhp at the wheels, which well lane calculated back to being 183bhp at the flywheel.

so its all a bit dubious

as for 1/4 mile times, my mate pulled a 14.5 (when it was 2.1) i think but he isn't a well rehersed launcher on the drag strip.

nope - dead straight. If you read the text it explains why.

Even an M3 can only do 155mph (electronically limited) There is a limit to any cars top speed regardless of how much power it has. It is all about gearing, power to weight and aerodynamics.

If the engine can only physically rev to 7000rpm and 7000rpm=145mph, that is all it will do. I don't need to tell you that to increase 0-60 times you will sacrifice top speed and vice-versa.

Take large diesel vans, they are quick off the line because they are geared to pull weight but are flat out at 90mph.

Also bear in mind how much loss there is in an old escort cossie's 4x4 drivetrain. Things have moved along a bit since then.

sorry to break the bad news mate.

e46 325 does about 140-145 tops...

Cossy does what.... I've been in ones timed at 155mph at Bruntingthorp, admitadly it was a stage 1 converted car and a 2wd 3 door. But that was 0-60 in 5 seconds.

A 325 is no where near as fast, in fact they arnt fast at all.

Have to agree that the BMW's are not that quick

Mate of mine a year or so ago bought a 330 Convertible (he denies it but was going through a 'dry' spell with the ladies and we reckon he bought it to try and pull....anyway)
So one day I was out somewhere in my sadly missed trusty 405 Mi16. Not the outright fastest car in the world but 160bhp and only 1100kg so no slouch either. Well another mate who was in the BMW reckoned the lad was absolutely battering it to keep up, and although he was not losing ground, he was stuggling to make any up......
The 405 once did 149mph. I thought the speedo was lying but I was racing my dad at the time (yeah could have been a good one to explain to the coppers that one) and his std fit digital speedo also said 149mph......and before you say it no he wasn't in an astra gte.....
