more gunson fun !

My non turbo mini was dyno at 60 at the wheels
@ 3.5 co idle ..

that was done aout a year ago and since then the carbs been fiddled with , and its been running dog rich for a while

My super duper gunsons gas analyser rated 7.5 co at idle ...

so obviousley I will set it again to 3.5 .. assuming the thing is accurate ...

Now I wonder what affect this would have had on my overall BHP figure ??

so the question is if it was 60bhp ..

with the mixture at idle complemtly bolloxed what would the BHP have been ...

50 BHP ?? 40 BHP ???

ive gone cross eyed now and need to resume programming ...

... y do i have to work ...

Fueling at idle is not important (well not greatly)

Fueling under load is ABSOLUTLY VITAL!

Get it rolling roaded or fit a wide band lamdba sensor and monitor now!

I always though that by setting the mixcture at idle on a SU .. you are greatly influencing the mixture through the rev range adn you are effectivky changing the position of the needle throught the rev range

I am developing a huge interest in lamdba sensors .. how where what when cost help etc !!!

Getting the idle mixture right does affect the base setting of the needle. But it is the profile of the needle that determines how the fuelling changes with different engine load/speed.
You could put virtually any needle you care to find from a 1300 basic metro to a MG needle to a turbo needle in an su and set the idle mixture to pretty close, but if the profile is wrong (which it will be unless the engine is to a std spec and has the matching needle) then it will be nowhere near throughout the rest of the rev range.

I too am interested in lambda sensors, do a search on the forum under "lambda" and plenty info pops up, including how to build your own mixture indicating gizmo.
I have a mate who loves messing about with electronics and after showing him the info he reckons he has all the electronic bits in his bedroom to build the box, so I have set him off with that!

As Tom says... idle is far from the complete picture!

Sold the turbo and seeing what the C20XE can do!

Near Lincoln

But if the needle was RR'd correctly and its just the base reading thats gone out then assuming the profile and engine spec hasnt changed setting the idle correctly should re-instate the RR tune...

I guess so as long as the seat hasnt worn and the needle hasnt either. Only thing is why it has gone out? got to be a reason at a guess. dont know what mind!

I would of thought it would be fine though.

Valve seat wear... bore wear...

They all have an effect on the fueling!!

Engines need regularly setting up not just once when they are new and that is that... the higher the state of tune the more often it tends to be needed!
