I'm after a spare gearbox to rebuild and a local scrappy has a 998 gearbox and engine sat in a H reg mini. They reckon the engine is probably shagged as it hasn't had a carb on for some time (the engine is of no use to me anyway). They want £75 for the lot, is this a reasonable price for a gearbox these days? I was specifically after a 998 box as it is unlikely to have been abused, so this may be just right.

Well OTT, you should be able to pick up a 998 motor for nothing, I've seen plenty given away on here.

If you are going to rebuild it anyway then you'll be replacing any knackered parts so I wouldn't worry about its history, all you really want is the mainshaft, selectors and casings.

Thanks, I might give it a miss. The only problem with getting a free engine is getting it to North Wales. There never seems to be one available anywhere near here.

I thought the gears on a used 998 would also be better than used 1275 gears? I am intending to stay helical for the moment, and it looks like my gearbox is still original at 80,000 miles.

£75 is a lot for a knackered engine with an unknown box on it. BENROSS has just had two unknown complete boxes of me for £25 each.

offer them £50 say thats all you have take it or leave it ............. .they will snatch your hand off

I actually get over to Yorkshire quite often as I am Yorkie in self imposed exile. The only problem is I normally have the girlfriend and dog in the car, and not a lot of room for car bits.
