One of the bolt holes for the thermostat housing seems to have become thread bare as the bolt is just spinning around in the hole (god knows how it got like that).

Is it worth helicoiling, or changing the head for another? It's a standard 998 engine and head.

Cheers guys.

Helicopil kit would be similar. Difference is you wil be able to do about 10 repairs with a kit and also not have to change the head gasket, reset the rockers etc etc etc.

Helicoil it, won't take long and can be done with the head in place. If you change the head you have to consider the cost of the gaskets, oil etc.. if you keep your head, at least you know the history of the head you're using. *wink*

Timeserts are another option...similar to helicoils.

I find the easiest way is to super glue the bolt to the end of one of my fingers.

Stoke-on-Trent. Duck.

All you effectively need to do is give the stud a decent enough 'home' to be sure the 'stat housing seals. It's not like it's structurally holding things together, Helicoils should be fine I reckon.

To be hones, I don't understand which one you favour here.

Mine gets in the way a bit, but only when it is up. If it is down it does not cause a problem.

With helicoils, will I be alright for clearance from galleries and such?

All good ideas, but a quick and dirty fix is to drill and tap a size up and drill out the housing to take the bigger stud/bolt(or make a stepped stud)
