Just after peoples opinions on replacing my heavy glass windows in the Mini with some lightweight plastic.

I've been looking into it, and I've settled on cutting my own as it'll save money, but I'm a little unsure on materials. I've been looking at prices and whilst I can find 4mm Polycarb/Lexan at fairly good prices, I can get 5mm perspex cheaper.

Weight differences aside, are there any other things I should be aware of with the perspex? Most window kits that I've seen seem to be made from Lexan - is this because perspex is unsuitable? If so, are there any other materials I could look at? For the moment I will only be replacing the side windows, and keeping the glass rear screen for now.

Any info/advise would be greatly appreciated.

Go for polycarb.

There is a nice slightly smoked version to.

I had a word with a local plastics firm, they did a cash job.

I think an 8x4 foot sheet is plenty with some to spare.

4mm is MSA spec if using it in competition, any thinner and it will flap about.

I used my original windows as templates and used an electric jigsaw, just make sure you leave the protective film on, also I added extra masking tape to make sure I left no stratches.

Yeh polycarb is the stuff to go for, persepx is prone to cracking.

With poly carb you can screw/rivet them in without fear of cracking them.

as for thickness 4mm is the 'official' minimum for motorsport use but if i was building a car for road/RWYB/Trackdays or something id go for 3mm and loose a 1/4 more weight!! it wont flap around enough to cause a problem.

Good thing with poly carb is the scratches can be pollished out if you have the right buff and compounds
(pending on how deep the gouges are)

remember for rad use you have to keep the front screen as laminated glass and poly carb wont do. however if you wanted to make the screen shotgun proof and brick / fridge proof you can get poly carb onded onto the glass ala police cars *hehe!*

To be honest, I've been looking on Ebay - there's a store that does alsorts of different sizes, thicknesses, colours etc:

There are a couple of places local as well that specialise in various plastics so I'm gonna get some more prices and see who's cheapest.

I used 4mm polycarb and paid about £60 for a 1200 x 900 sheet that did the rear window and 2 1/4 windows, and had enough left to do one door window.

Type in 4mm polycarbonate into google ad there are plenty of suppliers willing to deliver.

First time I spotted that stuff on ebay I didn't realise and thought my god thats cheap! Then after about 10 minutes of trying to find something else as cheap the penny dropped!
