Can it be done with engine in the car? Can't find nothing on the search!

i guess yes, but it would be a right pain in the ass

you have to take the transfer case off, and undo the pinion nut in the gearbox, not impossible in car, but id suggest doing it next time the engines out.

Probably not worth the hassle, I'd want to seperate the engine and box anyway to check the idler clearences.
